Mat Pause, a native of Hartford, Vt., heads into his second year as the head coach of Saint Michael's baseball in 2019-20.

After serving as an assistant coach in fall 2018, Pause was the interim head coach during the spring of 2019. Despite utilizing a roster that never exceeded 17 healthy student-athletes - among them only nine position players - the Purple Knights set a school record for pitching strikeouts (232) while defeating such regionally-ranked squads as American International College, Assumption College, Franklin Pierce University and Merrimack College while winning a season series from Saint Anselm College.

Pause carries a wealth of coaching and teaching experience, already serving as an assistant coach at three different institutions. He assisted Colby-Sawyer College between 2016 and 2018 after helping the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) qualify for the 2015 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series behind a 38-33 mark in his lone season there. During the spring of 2014, Pause was an assistant at the State University of New York Adirondack. Pause was the hitting coach for the Upper Valley Nighthawks of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in 2017 and 2018.

Pause was a math teacher from 2015-16 to 2017-18 at Hartford High School, his alma mater, after performing early field work and student teaching in the Rutland schools while an undergraduate at Castleton University.

Pause was a three-year starting catcher at Castleton, landing on the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) All-Conference first team as a junior. The Spartans went 116-66 during his career, winning the 2010 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament and 2012 NEAC Tournament to qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament both seasons. He earned the Teammate Award as a junior and senior, an accolade voted upon by the Castleton coaching staff.

Pause graduated from Castleton in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in math with a teaching license in secondary education. He went on to complete his master's degree in secondary education at Saint Joseph in 2015. During his time at Saint Joseph, Pause was involved in various departments on campus as a graduate assistant, including serving as a communication liaison in Athletics, Residence Life and Public Safety.
