Purple Knights fall to Southern Connecticut State, Rice nets first college goal

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team fell to Southern Connecticut State University, 5-1, on Saturday in a non-conference contest at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights move to 0-4 with the loss, while the Owls improve to 2-3.

Sophomore Shannon Rice (West River, Md./Elizabeth Seton) netted her first career goal for Saint Michael's, while classmate Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) stopped four shots.

Junior Sarah Cebry (Burlington, Conn./Lewis Mills) scored all five goals for Southern Connecticut State, and classmate Robin Donaldson (Canton, Conn./Canton) made four saves while picking up her first win of the season. First-year Bailey McGinnis (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) had two assists.

Cebry tallied three goals for the Owls in the opening half, all coming between 14:23 and 19:16. After facing a 3-0 deficit heading into halftime, Rice pulled Saint Michael's back to within two at 38:59, scoring on an assist from senior Erin Brien (Nahant, Mass./Newton Country Day School). Cebry knocked in two more at 51:34 and 65:21 to add insurance for the visitors.

Saint Michael's returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Adelphi University at 1 p.m.
