The Saint Michael's College field hockey team rallied from three one-goal deficits to force overtime during its Northeast-10 Conference opener before first-year Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem) scored 6:12 into the first overtime period to give Assumption College a 4-3 victory over the Purple Knights on Saturday at Duffy Field. With the Alumni Weekend defeat, Saint Michael's drops to 1-6, while the Greyhounds are 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10.
The Purple Knights received goals from seniors Erin Brien (Nahant, Mass./Newton Country Day School) and Kelly MacDonald (Wayland, Mass./Wayland), who both tallied their first of the season. Sophomore Sarah Healey (Canton, Mass./Canton) made eight saves, and senior Laken Ferreira (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) made a defensive save during overtime.
Frahm scored a pair of goals for Assumption, while first-years Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) and Austen Theroux (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) each netted one. Sophomore Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) made nine saves while picking up her third win of the season.
In overtime, Ferreira made a defensive save during the opening minute to temporarily deny Assumption the win, but Frahm later scored the game-winner by tipping a long penalty-corner pass from first-year Kiley Colucci (Glocester, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) over Healey and the Purple Knight defense.
Frahm converted a loose ball in front of the Saint Michael's net 3:39 into the game to put the Greyhounds up 1-0, but MacDonald scored at 14:11 on a centering pass from junior Kelly Celata (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) to pull the teams even. Beatrice tallied for Assumption in the 28th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage at the half.
Celata fired a cross in front of the Assumption net that was knocked in by a Greyhound back in the 41st minute to bring the game to a 2-2 tie, but Theroux scored off a rebound to put Assumption back on top at 58:34. Saint Michael's once more pulled even when Brien tallied at 61:56 on an assist from senior Hali Roy (South Pomfret, Vt./Woodstock Union).
The Purple Knights will hit the road to face Saint Anselm College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. NE-10 match-up.
