SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team dropped its season opener against No. 2 Shippensburg University, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon during the Jane Goss Memorial Tournament at the Robb Sports Complex. Shippensburg qualified for nine of the last 10 NCAA Tournaments, including the past five, and is ranked by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
The Purple Knights' lone goal came from sophomore Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional), who netted a penalty stroke for her first career goal in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) tied her career high with 19 saves. Junior Shannon Rice (West River, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and sophomore Kelsie Miller (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) both made defensive saves.
The Raiders were led by senior Bre White (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), who had a hat trick and two assists, while first-year Charlotte Cornell (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) scored two goals. Senior Carenna Neely (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and sophomore Taylor Webster (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each played a half in net. Neely made three saves, while Webster stopped two shots.
Miller's defensive save a little more than two minutes into the game kept the teams deadlocked before the Raiders began the scoring shortly thereafter, as White found senior Megan Jett (Bear, Del./Middletown) on the right side of the net and Jett hit the back of the net at 5:21. White was involved in each of the first five goals, including sneaking a shot through the pads of Chisholm to make it 2-0 at 8:43. Shippensburg added three more goals to take a 5-0 lead into the half, with two more by White coming at 20:35 and 27:18. Mazanec buried her penalty stroke in the 53rd minute before Cornell tacked on her two goals late in the second half.
