Three players score, field hockey moves back to .500 in NE-10 with win over Franklin Pierce

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team received goals from three different players en route to a 4-0 win over Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights won their second straight contest, moving to 4-7 overall and getting back to .500 in the Northeast-10 Conference at 2-2. The Ravens are 1-9 and 0-4. The victory was the Purple and Gold's fifth in its last six games with Franklin Pierce.

Junior Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) pushed her goal total to eight this season by scoring twice, and sophomore Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional) turned in a marker and an assist. Senior midfielder Courtney Bedell (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) posted her first college goal, and junior Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) made one stop for her second career shutout.

First-year Amy Zahensky (Bow, N.H./Bow) had six saves in 53:18 for the Ravens before sophomore Colette Donnelly (Woodbury, Conn./Wamogo Regional/Drew) made one stop in relief. Classmate Natalia Bachelder (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) recorded a defensive save in the 58th minute.

The Purple Knights broke on the board in the 11th minute when Davis tallied from the top of the circle off a direct corner play, with junior Hannah Beardsley (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) serving as the stick stop and Mazanec inserting the initial pass. Davis looked to double her squad's lead but drilled a pair of penalty-corner drives into Zahensky's pads in the 24th and 27th minutes.

In the 34th minute, junior Louise Gibbs (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) was stopped out front by the keeper, but Bedell collected the rebound and slipped a shot in at 33:56. The Purple Knights carried a 2-0 lead into halftime after blocking a pair of shots on Franklin Pierce penalty corners that occurred with no time remaining in the opening stanza.

Saint Michael's doubled its lead with a pair of markers in a matter of 2:27 midway through the second half. Davis rung a shot off the left post in the 51st minute before Mazanec grabbed the rebound and tallied, and Davis completed the scoring at 53:18, taking a pass from sophomore Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) in the center of the circle and hitting the lower left corner of the cage.

The Purple Knights complete a three-game homestand by opposing Assumption College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
