COLCHESTER, Vt. - Sophomore Morgan Mazanec's (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional) tally 5:44 into overtime sent the Saint Michael's College field hockey team past Assumption College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Duffy Field in Northeast-10 Conference play. With its third straight win, the Purple Knights improve to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the league while the Greyhounds fall to 4-8 and 0-4. It was the third straight overtime contest between the two teams and the sixth straight game that was decided by one goal.
Purple Knight sophomore Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) also tallied while junior Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) added an assist. Junior Shannon Rice (West River, Md./Elizabeth Seton) made a defensive save while classmate Sarah Healey (Canton, Mass./Canton) had four saves in net.
Greyhound junior Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) scored her team's lone goal and sophomore Sarah Frahm (Salem, N.H./Salem) dished out an assist. First-year Andrea Koslowski (Warren, Mass./Quaboag Regional) contributed a defensive save while senior keeper Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) stopped six shots.
In the first minute of the overtime period, Davis was on a breakaway from midfield and carried into the circle, but as she was moving the ball to her backhand, Philbrick met her 10 yards outside of the net and knocked the ball away to keep the game tied. Following a penalty corner five minutes later, Davis followed the rebound after her initial shot was blocked and carried around the diving keeper, flipping the ball toward the left post and finding Mazanec, who knocked it in for the game-winner at 75:44.
In the opening eight minutes of the game, the Purple Knights had four penalty corners that led to three shots, but two were saved while one went wide. The Greyhounds had a chance to take lead at 20:04, but Anderson's shot was stopped on the goal line by Rice to keep the game even. Nearing the end of the half in a scoreless tie, the Greyhounds broke through in the 31st minute when Frahm dribbled through the defense into the circle and passed the ball to the right side of the net to Anderson, who scored.
In the 40th minute, Mazanec's chance to even the score was stopped on the goal line by Koslowski. The Purple Knights looked to tie the game in the 63rd minute, but three straight shots in a span of 12 seconds were all denied by Philbrick. Saint Michael's knotted the game late. Following a blocked shot by sophomore Kelsie Miller (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional), Deschaine scooped up the rebound in front of the net to equalize the game at 63:04. Assumption nearly got the lead back with 4:30 remaining in regulation, as an attacker broke in on Healey but missed the left post.
The Purple Knights take a break from conference play and head down to Dowling College next Saturday at 12 p.m.
