Field hockey suffers 3-2 double-overtime defeat to regionally-ranked Adelphi on Senior Day

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Sophomore Kristen Bagley (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) scored midway through the second overtime period to send regionally-ranked Adelphi University past Saint Michael's College, 3-2, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Duffy Field. Following the third straight 3-2 contest between the teams in Colchester, the Purple Knights slipped to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in the league, while the Panthers are 8-8 and 3-5. Adelphi is sixth in the latest NCAA North Region ranking.

Saint Michael's, which is in the midst of a regular-season-ending four-game stretch against regionally-ranked teams, received both of its goals from junior Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) on Senior Day. Classmate Sarah Healey (Canton, Mass./Canton) made nine saves, and junior Shannon Rice (West River, Md./Elizabeth Seton) turned in a defensive save. With two games remaining, the Purple Knights are tied for sixth in a conference that accepts the top six into its postseason tournament.

Bagley, junior Carly Aceves (La Mesa, Calif./Helix Charter) and sophomore Olivia Nowokunski (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) all scored for Adelphi, with sophomore Kelly Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) posting six saves. First-year Rachel Colvin (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) provided a defensive stop.

In the first overtime, Saint Michael's rattled off advantages of 5-2 in shots and 4-1 in penalty corners, with Serrao turning aside three shots alone by senior Kelly Celata (Dedham, Mass./Dedham), including two in the 80th minute. However, the Panthers took the only two attempts during the second extra stanza, with Healey saving the first, an 87th-minute try by Bagley. In the 88th minute, a Panther sent a pass that was initially broken up by a Purple Knight field player before Bagley found the loose ball and drove in the winner at 87:05.

Adelphi grabbed a pair of one-goal leads in the opening half, with Aceves being stopped by Rice's defensive save in the 14th minute before immediately grabbing the rebound and opening the scoring at 13:08. After Serrao rushed out to knock away Davis' 24th-minute redirect attempt near the top of the circle during a 2-on-1 rush, Davis followed up a teammate's blocked shot to knot the contest at 26:13. However, a three-shot sequence by the visitors during the 33rd minute ended with another go-ahead tally. Healey stopped the first two tries, but Nowokunski deposited the third at 32:34.

In the second half, Saint Michael's sophomore Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) was stopped by Serrao in the 52nd minute before Deschaine's follow-up attempt was stopped near the left post by Colvin. The Purple Knights drew even in the 61st minute, with Davis driving a penalty-corner strike into the cage at 60:48 following an entry pass by sophomore Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional). Adelphi took the final eight shots of regulation, with Healey stopping the only two on target, and the squads headed to overtime.

Prior to the contest, the Purple Knights honored their three seniors as part of a Senior Day ceremony: Celata, Courtney Bedell (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and Caroline Casper (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy).

Saint Michael's completes its regular season with a pair of road contests, beginning at Bentley University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Falcons are not only ranked fourth in the NCAA North Region poll, but stand 10th in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's (NFHCA) national rankings.
