NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four different Saint Michael's College field hockey players scored, and senior goalkeeper Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) stopped a pair of penalty strokes to help the Purple Knights rally past Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, 4-1, on Sunday during the Dora Metrelis Field Hockey Classic at Southern Connecticut State University's Jess Dow Field. Saint Michael's improved to 1-1, while the Mounties fell to 0-2.
Chisholm made seven saves, while senior Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) and sophomore Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) both registered one goal and one assist. Senior Amy Kangas (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and sophomore Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) also tallied, and senior Shannon Rice (West River, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and junior Kelsie Miller (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) contributed defensive saves. The goals by Avery and Kangas were their first as collegians.
Senior Lacey Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) scored for Mansfield, and sophomore Laura Lawson (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) notched 12 stops.
The Purple and Gold fired off nine of the game's first 12 shots, with Lawson stopping five and another hitting the post, but Croasdale broke the deadlock 22:53 into the contest, initially being denied by Chisholm before pouncing on her own rebound. Late in the opening half, Saint Michael's found the equalizer, as Kangas tipped Davis' pass into an open net at 32:33, and the teams took a 1-1 score into halftime.
After making a save in the opening minute of the second half, Chisholm came up with her biggest stop yet at 39:33 on a penalty stroke. A little more than four minutes later, the Purple Knights took the lead for good, as Davis had a shot saved, but Deschaine poked home the rebound at 44:00. Davis added insurance in the 57th minute with a high shot following Avery's centering pass. Senior Rebecca Adams (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) made a defensive save for the Mounties in the 62nd minute, but Avery scored in the 65th minute after pulling in a rebound of Davis' stopped shot.
The Purple Knight defense preserved the 4-1 lead during the final four minutes despite a handful of Mansfield chances. Rice posted her third defensive save of the campaign during the 67th minute, which immediately preceded Chisholm stopping her second stroke of the contest, at 66:07. In the 69th minute, Miller had a defensive stop of her own on the final scoring chance for either squad.
Saint Michael's begins its home slate on Saturday by hosting nationally-ranked Stonehill College at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks are ranked seventh by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
