Mazanec nets hat trick, Bowie claims first shutout during 4-0 win over Mansfield

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team picked up its first victory of the season by downing Mansfield (Pa.) University, 4-0, on Sunday to complete the DoubleTree Fall Classic on Duffy Field. The Purple Knights moved to 1-1 on the year, while the Mountaineers slipped to 0-2.

No. 4 Shippensburg University, which is nationally ranked by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), knocked off Southern Connecticut State University, 2-0, during the first game of the day. The squads were taking part in a season-opening tournament together for the seventh straight fall.

Senior Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional) recorded her first career hat trick for the Purple Knights, while sophomore Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) came off the bench to net her initial collegiate goal. Senior Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) handed out a pair of assists. Junior Abigail Bowie (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) posted six saves while earning the first victory and shutout of her career, and senior Kelsie Miller (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) picked up a late defensive save to preserve the clean sheet.

Junior Laura Lawson made seven saves for Mansfield, and senior Avery Yoder recorded a defensive save.

Bowie made a pair of stops in the opening seven minutes to keep the game scoreless, including with her left blocker in the sixth minute, before Mazanec broke the deadlock in the 10th minute. Junior Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) sent a short pass to the left post for Mazanec, who had an initial shot stopped by Yoder on a defensive save, but Mazanec grabbed the rebound and scored at 9:21.

Six minutes later, Avery fed Deschaine at the left post, but Deschaine's point-blank backhander was turned aside by Lawson. Matthews doubled the lead at 23:16, as junior Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School) had a shot blocked, but the ball trickled to Deschaine, whose backhanded hit was tipped in by Matthews. Just before the half, Mazanec pushed the lead to 3-0 by converting a penalty stroke at 32:07.

During the 52nd minute, Mazanec sent a penalty-corner entry pass to the top of the arc for Deschaine, who hit the ball toward the left post for Mazanec, who completed her hat trick at the 52-minute mark. In the final 6:31, Bowie and the Purple Knight defense weathered four Mansfield penalty corners and three shots on goal to secure the shutout, with Bowie recording two saves and Miller notching her defensive stop in the 66th minute.

The Purple Knights head to Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday for a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
