Field hockey's late charge falls short in season-finale loss to Southern Connecticut State, 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team had a penalty stroke denied with 4.1 seconds remaining before falling to Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference action at Duffy Field on Saturday. The Purple Knights, winners in four of their last six games entering Saturday, end their season at 8-10 overall and 4-8 in the league, while the Owls conclude their fall at 6-12 and 4-8.

Saint Michael's junior Abigail Bowie (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) recorded 10 stops for her eighth double-digit save performance of the season. Bowie collected 148 saves, the sixth most in program history, all while serving as the team's lone goalkeeper. Sophomore Jenna Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) posted a 67th-minute defensive save. Senior Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) made her 72nd and final appearance with Saint Michael's, moving her into a tie for sixth in program history. The Purple Knights fell one win shy of matching last year's total despite losing 12 players from the 2014 squad, including eight starters.

Southern Connecticut State first-year Sadie Young scored and registered a defensive save. Senior Audrey Dolloff ender her collegiate career with a 13-save shutout.

Saint Michael's narrowly edged Southern Connecticut State, 7-6, in shots during the first half. At 12:38, junior Bailey McGinnis drove down the left side and had her low shot stopped by Bowie before first-year Kya O'Donnell was denied on the doorstep rebound chance. Southern Connecticut State pulled ahead at 18:13 as Young sent a low shot from the top of the circle into the lower right side of the net. Saint Michael's looked to pull even at 22:55, but senior Mackenzie Hudson's (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) shot through traffic was blocked out by an Owl defender. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) fought off a defender in the circle before sending a shot wide left. The Purple Knights had one final burst in the half as Hudson and junior Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School) raced up the field 2-on-0 before Dusha's low shot was kicked out by Dolloff with 1:35 left.

The hosts were kept off the board during a 14-shot second half. Sophomore Micaela Hajduk (Winthrop, Maine/Winthrop) was denied 6:54 into the second stanza when her shot from the right post trickled across the goal mouth before being knocked out by Young. First-year Tess Klappe (Buren, The Netherlands/Koningin Wilhelmina College) was then stopped on the left side by a diving Dolloff in the 62nd minute. With 3:30 remaining, Jenna Deschaine made a defensive save on the left post to deny McGinnis. As time ticked away in the game, Purple Knight junior Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was brought down in the circle to give the hosts a penalty stroke opportunity with 4.1 seconds remaining. On the ensuing play, Dolloff made a diving stick save to preserve the shutout.

Saint Michael's honored its five seniors prior to the contest: Deschaine, Hudson, Micaele Heil (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls), Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional) and Kelsie Miller (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional).
