Field hockey falls to Molloy, 1-0 in overtime, suffers third one-goal setback

EAST ROCKAWAY, N.Y. - Junior Jessica Waszcak scored with 2:45 remaining in the first overtime period, and the Saint Michael's College field hockey team lost to Molloy College, 1-0, on Sunday at Bay Park Field. The Purple Knights slipped to 2-6, with three of their losses now by one goal, while the Lions are 1-4.

Senior Abigail Bowie (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) made seven saves for the visitors, increasing her career total to 219 and passing Jess Anderson '05 (213) for ninth in program history. Saint Michael's is amid a four-day stretch during which three contests will occur on the road. Waszcak scored while graduate student Arianna Ovadia had 12 saves for Molloy, which is in its first season of varsity competition.

The Purple Knights had an early opportunity during an eighth-minute penalty corner sequence, but Ovadia made two saves while a third shot was pushed wide. Senior Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School) had a chance stopped by Ovadia during another penalty set in the 10th minute before Bowie came up with stops 13 seconds apart in the 16th minute to keep it scoreless. In the 26th minute, Bowie saved junior Zoe Norton's attempt before a Lion sent a follow-up bid wide. Purple Knights picked up shots off of corner plays in the 27th and 28th minutes, neither of which reached the goal, and Bowie saved consecutive Norton shots in the 30th minute.

Saint Michael's had a sustained opportunity early in the second half, with sophomore Maddy Dobecki (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) saved late in the 37th minute before Dusha and senior Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) had back-to-back bids denied in the 38th. The second led to a corner set, during which Dobecki sent a shot wide. Bowie made one more stop of Norton in the 67th minute, and the Purple Knights ran three corners over the final 2:45, but the only shot in that time, by Dobecki with 25 seconds left, was blocked.

Molloy started overtime with a handful of scoring chances, including as Bowie saved a Waszcak shot on a 72nd-minute corner, and Norton's rebound attempt was wide of the target. Sophomore Morgan Johnston (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) and Dobecki were denied in the 76th and 77th minutes, respectively, and Molloy won on the next shot. On a corner play, Norton found Waszcak, who tallied the winner at 82:15.

The Purple Knights head to Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
