Field hockey falls to Pace, 2-1, during fifth overtime contest in six games

COLCHESTER, Vt. - First-year Madison McGowan scored 2:33 into the second overtime period as Saint Michael's College fell to Pace University, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Duffy Field. The loss moves the Purple Knights to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in league play. The win helps Pace improve to 6-4 and 4-2. The game marks the fourth consecutive overtime contest for Saint Michael's, which has needed extra time in five of its last six outings. The Purple Knights' five overtime games this season are their most since 2007.

Junior Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) scored the Purple Knights' lone goal while senior Abigail Bowie (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) made seven saves. Sophomore Claire Kondrotas (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) registered two defensive saves.

For Pace, sophomore Rachel Platko scored the first goal and classmates Samantha Gray and Jane Kasparian contributed an assist each. Junior Lesly Sanchez Alvarez recorded 16 saves in the win, while classmate Margaret Mclean notched a defensive stop.

Two minutes into the second overtime period, Pace took advantage of a Saint Michael's turnover as Kasparian pushed the ball down the right wing before sending a pass across the net to McGowan, who tapped home the game-winner at 87:33.

In the sixth minute Pace put up a flurry of shots starting with one from sophomore Halley Rose that beat Bowie but was stopped by Kondrotas for a defensive save. The next came from Platko, which was again stopped by Kondrotas. Following a penalty corner at 5:47, Bowie was forced to make two more quick saves on shots by McGowan and first-year Louisa Wegener.

Early in the 12th minute senior Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School) fired a shot on goal that was denied by Sanchez Alvarez, who dove to the ground in order to stop the low shot with her blocker, and junior Jenna Deschaine's (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) follow-up attempt was stopped by Mclean. At 27:30, Dusha fired another shot that was saved, but this time Matthews was able to corral the rebound and tap it in for the goal. The Purple Knights took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second half Pace answered. A shot by McGowan hit the post and Platko was able to get to the rebound and tap it home to knot the score at 1-1 at 36:45. In the 40th minute Bowie was forced to make back-to-back saves on shots by senior Brittany Predmore and then Rose just seconds later.

Following a Matthews penalty corner at 44:03, the Purple Knights fired off four consecutive shots that were all denied by Sanchez Alvarez, with Matthews rattling off the final three. In the final minute of regulation, sophomore Maddy Dobecki (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) sent a dangerous pass across the face of goal that senior Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) just barely missed tapping home. The teams headed into the first overtime knotted at 1-1.

A little more than four minutes into overtime, Avery received a pass from Dobecki before beating a defender to create an opportunity alone on goal, but Avery's would-be game-winner was denied by a sliding Sanchez Alvarez. At 77:32 Rose was set up beautifully on the back post by Kasparian but her attempt to finish missed wide to the left. The teams remained tied at the conclusion of the first overtime.

The Purple Knights cap a three-game homestand by taking on Mercy (N.Y.) College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
