Field hockey falls at Assumption, Bowie climbs three Saint Michael's charts

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team fell at Assumption College, 3-0, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play at the Assumption Multi-Sport Stadium. The Purple Knights are 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the league, while the Greyhounds improved to 9-6 and 6-4.

Senior Abigail Bowie (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) made eight saves, and sophomore Claire Kondrotas (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) recorded her fifth defensive save of the season. Bowie improved her career save total to 271, passing Megan Scalley '02 (270) to take over sixth in program annals despite not seeing any time as an underclassman. Bowie has also appeared for 2,453:56, edging past Caroline Patrie '88 (2,419:59) to claim seventh in school history. By seeing time in those 2,453:56 without rest, she moved beyond Jean Harbeck '90 (2,408) for the second-longest streak of consecutive minutes by a keeper ever at Saint Michael's. She trails only Tina Nardi '07 (2,478:14).

Senior Meghan Sullivan and junior Allison Sheahan both had a goal and an assist for Assumption, and first-year Kristen McCarthy also scored. Sophomore Sarah Bodzinski made three saves after each of the teams' prior eight meetings had been determined by one goal.

McCarthy knocked home the first shot of the game for either team after 3:04, spinning out front and going five-hole. Bowie rattled off saves in the fifth and 11th minutes to keep it 1-0, and Kondrotas denied McCarthy with a defensive stop later in the 11th minute. However, Sullivan doubled the lead at 10:51 by tipping home Sheahan's pass across the circle.

The Greyhounds padded their lead in the 25th minute, as Bowie stopped junior Belle Ives' shot before Sheahan gathered the rebound and tallied on the final shot of the half for either squad.

In the second half, the Purple Knights held a 3-1 edge in penalty corners while being outshot just 7-5, but neither team found the back of the net. Seniors Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School) and Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) had consecutive shots 12 seconds apart turned away between the 38th and 39th minutes, and sophomore Janelle Robinson (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) sent another bid wide shortly thereafter. Bowie denied senior Andrea Koslowski's attempt during a penalty corner sequence in the 62nd minute before Saint Michael's ran off three corner plays of its own 1:19 apart in the final 3:26 but was able to see only Avery register a shot, which was blocked.

The Purple Knights take on American International College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for their final home contest of the fall.
