Field Hockey Drops Road Contest to Nationally-Ranked LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team hit the road against No. 8 LIU Post on Sunday, leaving with a 5-1 Northeast-10 Conference loss at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The Pioneers won last year's NE10 Championship while qualifying for their third NCAA Tournament in four seasons.

The Purple Knights are now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NE10 while the Pioneers, who knocked off the No. 1 team in the nation on Thursday, are 4-0 and 1-0. The national ranking is according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).

Senior Jenna Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) potted the lone goal, her second of the season, for the Purple Knights with junior Nicole White (Cranston, R.I./Lincoln School) adding the assist. Sophomore Anna Hurley (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) collected seven saves.

Junior Emily Miller had a hat trick for the day for LIU Post while senior Alyssa Lopresti and junior Julie Gysels pitched in a goal each. Sophomore Taylor Brodsky notched two assists, while first-year Rachel Vellis accounted for no saves account for the Pioneers.

During the eighth and 11th minutes, Brodsky set up Lopresti and Gysels, respectively. For the second goal, Brodsky sent a penalty corner pass to Gysels at the top of the circle, with Gysels sailing a shot past Hurley to put the Pioneers up 2-0. The Purple Knights then later performed a similar play at 28:46 with White connecting with Deschaine to allow their team to trail the Pioneers 2-1. Miller finished off the scoring in the first stanza 1:48 later to put LIU Post ahead 3-1 and kick off her natural hat trick. Miller completed the scoring for the Pioneers in the second half in the 38th and 67th minutes. The Purple Knights held the Pioneers to eight shots during the second half.

The Purple Knights continue play on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at No. 5 Saint Anselm College.
