COLCHESTER, Vt. - Two second-half goals lifted the Saint Michael's College field hockey team past Southern Connecticut State University, 2-0, on Saturday at Duffy Field during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights are 6-7 overall and 3-5 in the league, while the Owls slipped to 2-12 and 0-8.
Senior back Jenna Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) notched her sixth goal of the season for the Purple Knights while first-year Maddie Green (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) scored her first collegiate goal. Junior Maddy Dobecki (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and first-year Shelagh Fluharty (Fitchburg, Mass./Saint Bernard's Central Catholic) pitched in assists as sophomore Anna Hurley (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) made three saves to register her fifth shutout as she is tied for ninth for program history in single-season shutouts. Sophomore Brianna Craft tallied nine saves for the Owls. She is currently leading the conference in saves.
During the fourth and eighth minutes, senior Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) and Green opened up the first half with their shots being blocked and saved, respectively. Junior Morgan Johnston (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) redirected a pass from the middle of the circle in the 11th minute that was stopped by Craft. Shortly after at 11:17, Johnston struck again as Craft saved the shot, falling to the ground, leaving the net wide open as Fluharty tried to capitalize, but sent it left of the goal.
Later in the first half, Green stole the ball at the top of the circle before deking Craft, but was unable to fire a shot on the open net before an Owl defender cleared the ball. Southern Connecticut State had a chance during the final minute of the first stanza during a penalty corner as first-year Jessica Maier sent a pass to the left wing to junior Jacqueline Touzos, as Hurley denied Touzos' shot.
In the 38th minute, Maier slammed a shot from the right side with Hurley making a right blocker save. At 44:03, Deschaine netted the winning goal, as Johnston sent a shot during a penalty corner sequence that Fluharty tipped out wide for Deschaine, who collected and sailed the ball to the inside of the left post. Extending the Purple and Gold lead, Dobecki sent a hard pass from the top of the circle during the 54th minute amid another corner sequence that Green tipped over the prone goalie. The Owls' final opportunity came in the 69th minute as junior Sadie Young's shot was halted by Hurley and an ensuing corner resulted in no shots.
The Purple Knights travel to Bentley University on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before hosting three games over a period of four days.
