COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College field hockey team fell to Adelphi University, 2-1, on Saturday at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 6-9 overall and 3-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers improved to 7-9 and 5-5. The Panthers have qualified for two of the past three NCAA Tournaments.
Junior Morgan Johnston (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) tallied the goal for the Purple Knights as sophomore Anna Hurley (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) registered two saves. First-year Jackie Brown had a goal and an assist for the Panthers while classmate Lauren Parrinello pitched in the other goal. Senior Samantha Nizich added an assist as classmate Amanda Gargiulo finished with no saves.
Junior Maddy Dobecki (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) got the first shot off of the game as it sailed just left of the goal in the seventh minute. Shortly after in the ninth minute, Brown's shot from just inside the circle caused Hurley to make a diving save near the left post. In the 21st minute, first-year Maddie Green (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) hit a pass that sliced down the center of the circle as Dobecki got her stick on it to pop it up just high of the goal.
During the 26th minute, Johnston capitalized off of a rebound from first-year Marieke Algie's (De Bilt, The Netherlands/Utrechts Stedelijk Gymnasium) shot. Johnston dove for the loose ball to tip it into the right side to give the Purple Knights the 1-0 advantage. During the 31st minute, junior Kate Manson received a bouncing pass from the left side and turned to shoot and cause Hurley to go for a diving save near the left post. Parrinello, who scored her first collegiate goal, hit the equalizer at 32:38 as she lobbed a shot over Hurley after taking a pass from Brown.
Within a span of 4:37 near the beginning of the second half, Saint Michael's held four penalty corner sequences that resulted in no shots. During the 45th minute, the Panthers sent two back-to-back crosses within the Purple Knight circle as no one was able to get a stick on the ball. Senior Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) held the greatest opportunity for the Purple Knights during the 50th minute as she received a pass from Johnston with her shot knicking the outside of the left post. In the 60th minute, Brown gave the Panthers the 2-1 advantage as her shot from the center of the circle was deflected off of a Saint Michael's defender to the right side. That proved to be the final shot of the game as the teams combined to take only two shots in the second half.
