COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey first-year forward Niall Foster (Newmarket, N.H./Walpole Express) was named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, Jan. 14, becoming the fourth different Purple Knight first-year to claim the accolade this season. The NE10 Rookie of the Week has hailed from Saint Michael's six times in nine weeks during the 2017-18 campaign. Eight different Purple and Gold student-athletes have now earned major weekly awards.
Senior forward Keegan Finn (Yarmouth, Mass./Bay State Breakers), junior defenseman Jack Ouellette (Arlington, Mass./Dexter School) and sophomore goalie Tim Decker (Liverpool, N.Y./Canterbury School) all earned spots on the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll. Decker landed his fifth weekly accolade of the winter, while Finn and Ouellette were lauded for the first time in their respective careers. Saint Michael's swept a two-game weekend set at defending NE10 Championship titlist Assumption College, taking over first place in the league in the process.
Foster scored the game-tying goal with 2:10 left in the third period of a 4-3 win on Saturday while going plus-1 and turning in a 5-of-10 faceoff performance. The goal, which went down as Foster's first collegiate point, gave Saint Michael's a school-record-tying 10 first-years with a goal, matching the 1999-2000 squad's program mark. All 12 first-years now have points. Foster claimed three draws in a 2-0 win on Friday and is tied for third on the squad with 47 triumphs this season.
Finn scored a game-winning goal, assisted another game-winner, went plus-3 and blocked five shots from the bottom two lines during a 2-0 weekend. On Friday, Finn had the only helper on the winner at 2:51 of the second period while going plus-1 and blocking two shots as the fourth-line left wing. Finn then netted the winner with 3:04 left in a 4-3 win on Saturday, turning in a plus-2 effort and three blocked shots as the third-line left wing. Finn's blocked shot with two seconds remaining and the Greyhounds playing with a 6-on-5 advantage sealed the triumph. He has a career-high five points in 15 games to go along with a plus-3 rating and 12 blocked shots.
Ouellette scored a game-winning goal while assisting another game-winner among his two helpers during the weekend, as he also was plus-2 while helping his team post a 1.50 goals-against average. Ouellette netted the winning goal at 2:51 of the second period on Friday, as he was plus-2 with a block while assisting an insurance marker at 10:15 of the third period. On Saturday, Ouellette assisted the tying goal at 2:10 of the final stanza. With a career-high seven assists, Ouellette leads the team and is tied for seventh in the NE10. He is fourth among defensemen with eight points while also turning in a plus-7 rating.
Decker went 2-0 with a shutout, a 1.50 GAA and a .952 save percentage over the weekend, averaging 29.5 saves and yielding only two even-strength goals. Decker had 24 saves, including 14 in the third period, while handing the Assumption its first shutout of the season, 2-0, on Friday. In the Purple Knights' 4-3 victory on Saturday, Decker made 35 stops while helping Saint Michael's overcome a 3-1 deficit, yielding only a single marker after the opening 6:59 of action. Decker is tied for the league lead with five wins while standing second in both save percentage (.924) and GAA (2.36) through nine contests, all starts.
At 8-6-1 overall and 5-2 in the NE10, Saint Michael's hosts Stonehill College for a two-game weekend series, beginning when the teams square off on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
