COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey junior Chris Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Pomfret School) was named Northeast-10 Conference Goalie of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, Jan. 21, becoming the ninth different Purple and Gold student-athlete to earn a major weekly award this year. Senior Eric Salzillo (Johnston, R.I./Boston Bandits) and junior Sam D'Antuono (Hingham, Mass./Dexter School) both claimed positions on the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll.
Johnson made 21 stops during a 4-1 win over Stonehill College on Saturday, including nine during the Skyhawks' five power plays, to register a victory that helped Saint Michael's take over sole possession of first place after Saint Anselm College lost. It was his only contest of the weekend, as Stonehill tallied just a tying goal at 6:33 of the third period, and Johnson never allowed the visitors to take the lead. In a platoon role for the first time in his career, Johnson has a career-best 3.01 goals-against average while recording an .897 save percentage. At 4-3 through eight games, he leads the NE10 in winning percentage (57.1%). Johnson is sixth in program history in career saves (1,654) and tied for ninth in wins (17).
Salzillo dished off four assists - on six Saint Michael's goals - while going 20-for-34 (58.8%) on faceoffs during a 1-1 weekend with Stonehill. In a 3-2 loss on Friday, he had primary assists on goals at 11:40 and 14:59 of the opening period to make it 2-0 while going 12-of-16 on draws. In a 4-1 victory the following day, he had the primary assist on a power-play goal at 17:26 of the first period that made it 1-0 before lending a helper during a three-goal third period that helped Saint Michael's net the game's final three tallies. He won eight more faceoffs while blocking a shot. Salzillo is tied for fifth in the NE10 in assists (9), tied for seventh in points (15) and tied for ninth in goals (6). In addition to a plus-8 rating, Salzillo is 162-for-290 (55.9%) on faceoffs.
D'Antuono scored twice, went plus-2 and won 61.4 percent (35-of-57) of his faceoffs during a 1-1 weekend with Stonehill. On Friday, he had an even rating and went 13-for-29 on draws. D'Antuono was instrumental in the 4-1 victory on Saturday, scoring the game-winner at 10:51 of the third period before adding a shorthanded empty-net marker with 22 seconds left to pad the lead. He also was 22-of-28 at the dot and blocked a shot. While plus-3, D'Antuono leads the Purple Knights in faceoff wins and percentage, having gone 199-for-348 (57.2%).
At 9-7-1 overall and 6-3 in the NE10, Saint Michael's visits Southern New Hampshire University for a two-game weekend set, beginning on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
