CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team suffered a pair of setbacks during the fourth day of its Spring Break trip, falling to Queens (N.Y.) College, 5-3, before dropping a 12-1 decision to Mercy (N.Y.) College on Thursday at the National Training Center Spring Games. After the pair of defeats, the Purple Knights drop to 0-8 on the season.
Senior Brittany Cantore (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) picked up a hit and an RBI against Queens, while classmate Carleen McLaughlin (Branford, Conn./Branford) and junior Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) each got a hit and scored. Junior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) took the loss before senior Lauren Mercik (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) allowed one hit during three scoreless innings.
Junior Kaitlyn Crowley (Patchogue, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist) and sophomore Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Va./Annandale) each went 2-for-3 while driving in a pair of runs for 1-2 Queens. Yaroch surrendered three hits and one earned run while striking out six to secure the complete-game victory.
Queens scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before the Purple Knights struck for a pair of runs in the top of the second that included an RBI single from Cantore. Yaroch and Crowley knocked two-out, two-run doubles for the Knights in the second and third, respectively, before Brigante scored for Saint Michael's in the fourth, making the score 5-3. After senior Lindsay Houston (Concord, N.H./Concord) walked leading off the seventh, the Purple Knights brought the tying run to the plate three times but did not score.
In the second game, junior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) went 2-for-4 for the Purple Knights, while Cantore added a hit and a run. Junior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) picked up an RBI, and first-year Jessica Niles (Chaumont, N.Y./General Brown) was handed the loss.
Sophomore Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) hit 3-for-5 and picked up a pair of RBIs for 5-4 Mercy, classmate Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) had three RBIs, and redshirt senior Kimberly Crnkovich (La Selva Beach, Calif./Santa Rosa CC/Hawaii Hilo) drove in three runs and scored three times. Junior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) picked up the win with four shutout innings.
The Mavericks scored three times in each the third and fifth innings, with half of the runs unearned, before Falls' RBI groundout scored Cantore for Saint Michael's during the bottom of the fifth. Mercy tacked on six more runs in the seventh inning.
Saint Michael's is back in action tomorrow when it faces the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) at 1 p.m. before playing its final Spring Break game against Mercy at 3 p.m.
