Softball endures pair of setbacks as Spring Break trip draws to a close

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost twice during the final day of its Spring Break trip, falling to the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.), 8-1, before slipping to a 3-0 defeat against Mercy (N.Y.) College on Friday at the National Training Center Spring Games. The Purple Knights drop to 0-10 on the year after Friday's defeats.

Senior Brittany Cantore (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) went 1-for-2 and picked up an RBI in the opener for Saint Michael's, while first-year Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) walked and scored. Classmate Jessica Niles (Chaumont, N.Y./General Brown) took the loss before senior reliever Lauren Mercik (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) held the Cougars scoreless on three hits over the final three frames to complete a 4.1-inning stint.

Sophomore Erin Scott (Aurora, Colo./Seward County CC) hit 2-for-4 and had three RBIs for the 3-8 Cougars, while senior Katie Larson (New Ulm, Minn./Iowa Lakes CC/Cathedral) was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Senior Priscilla Quintana (Los Angeles, Calif./Iowa Lakes CC/Mayfair) and first-year Samantha Kane (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) each finished 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Junior Bailey Bouman (Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone Area) struck out eight batters during a complete-game win.

Cantore knocked a two-out single that scored DelGreco in the top of the second inning to put the Purple Knights in front, 1-0, before Sioux Falls scored five runs - all unearned - in the bottom of the frame and added three more in the third.

Sophomore Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) was 1-for-2 in the Purple Knights' second game against Mercy in as many days, while junior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) and first-year Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) each finished 1-for-3. Junior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) suffered the loss while tossing a complete game.

Senior Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) batted 2-for-3 and had an RBI for the Mavericks, who improve to 7-4, while junior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) was 2-for-2 and allowed two hits over four innings to earn the win. Sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and classmate Jillian Mondrone (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) finished 2-for-4 and scored twice. Junior Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) recorded the save with a perfect seventh.

Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning before doubling its lead in the third frame. Saint Michael's advanced runners into scoring position in the second and fourth innings but couldn't drive them home. McCormack held the Mavericks scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, before Mercy pushed across a third run in the seventh.

The Purple Knights return to the field on Tuesday when they play a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division doubleheader at Saint Anselm College. The opening contest is slated for 3 p.m.
