NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College softball team fell to a pair of Northeast-10 Conference defeats at Southern Connecticut State University, slipping 8-0 in five innings before dropping a 10-2 decision in six innings on Saturday at Pelz Field. The Purple Knights fall to 0-12 overall and 0-2 in the league, while the Owls improve to 9-6 and 4-1.
Seniors Brittany Cantore (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) and Lindsay Houston (Concord, N.H./Concord) and junior Brittany Regis (Monroe, N.H./Saint Johnsbury Academy) all batted 1-for-2 for Saint Michael's in the opening contest. Senior Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) took the loss while pitching 4.2 innings during her first outing of the season.
Senior Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for Southern Connecticut State, while sophomore Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn./Darien) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Senior Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn./Amity) also hit 2-for-3, and first-year Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) picked up the win.
Regis hit a first-inning single for the visitors before the Owls tacked on a pair of runs on three hits in the second frame. Houston connected for the Purple Knights' second single in the third inning, and Southern Connecticut State added three runs in its half of the stanza. After Frank held the hosts hitless in the fourth, Cantore singled in the fifth before the Owls plated three more runs later in the inning.
In the second game, sophomore Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) finished 1-for-2 with a run for the Purple Knights, while junior Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) was 1-for-3 and scored. Junior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) took the loss.
Senior Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J./Paramus Catholic) went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a pair of runs for the Owls, sophomore Kristie Vitulli (Bronx, N.Y./The Ursuline School) hit 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and junior Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) drove in a pair of runs. First-year Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) struck out six while earning the win.
After Southern Connecticut State scored a run in the first and third innings, Murray drew a one-out walk for the Purple Knights before moving to third on a Brigante single. Cantore walked to load the bases, and Brigante and Murray scored on a two-out throwing error to knot the game at 2-2. The Owls responded with four runs in the fourth and sixth innings while holding the Saint Michael's scoreless.
The Purple Knights are back in action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader at the University of New Haven with the first game scheduled for 11 a.m.
