Saint Michael's slips twice at Franklin Pierce, drops 4-3 decision in opener

RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team suffered a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division losses on Tuesday at Franklin Pierce University, 4-3 and 5-1, at the Franklin Pierce Softball Field. The Purple Knights have now lost 16 times by four runs or less, falling to 0-29 overall and 0-11 in the division, while the Ravens are 6-19 and 3-9.

Junior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and a double for the visitors in game one, while senior Brittany Cantore (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) finished 2-for-3. Junior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) singled and scored. Senior Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) took the loss after allowing four runs in six innings.

Junior Ashley Noke (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) hit a three-run homer and finished 2-for-3 for Franklin Pierce, while senior Jessica Furtado (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) had a 2-for-3 day with an RBI. Classmate Rachel Allen (Hull, Mass./Hull) yielded two earned runs during a complete-game victory.

Falls came around to score on a two-out error in the first inning before ripping a two-out, two-run double in the second to give the Purple Knights a 3-0 lead. Murray led off the third with a single before being stranded at second, and Noke swatted a tying home run with one down in the home half. With two out, Furtado completed the four-run frame with an RBI knock.

Cantore singled to begin the fourth before being left in scoring position, and singles by junior Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and Falls in the sixth and seventh, respectively, yielded no runs.

Falls was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in game two, and Lemnah singled and scored. First-year Jessica Niles (Chaumont, N.Y./General Brown) struck out five in six innings during the loss.

First-year Sam Conners (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) homered for the hosts while scoring twice and driving in two. Classmate Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double, and first-year Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) struck out five during the victory.

Conners made it 2-0 in the second with her longball, and the Ravens pushed their lead to three the next inning. Falls doubled home Lemnah with one down in the fourth before the hosts countered with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Purple Knights reached second and third with one down in the seventh, but Adee got a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam and end the contest.

Saint Michael's hosts Saint Anselm College on Thursday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
