In the opener, sophomore Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a double, and first-year Caroline Staples (Stoughton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) went 1-for-1 with a run off the bench, singling in the fourth inning for her first career hit. Senior Jaclyn Giovannini (Plano, Texas/Plano East) went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs as one of four Warriors to homer. First-year Mariah Tenney (Winchendon, Mass./Winchendon) was 2-for-2 with two runs, four RBIs and a homer, and classmate Haley Currie (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits in five innings.
Merrimack scored four runs on three hits in the first inning before adding eight more runs in the second frame. The Purple Knights got on the board when Staples led off the fourth with an infield single, moved to second on an error, and scored when DelGreco doubled to left center.
In the nightcap, sophomore Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Staples ripped a pinch-hit double, and senior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) added a hit while scoring a run. Ruonavaara homered with one down in the second inning as the only batter among the first 10 to reach against Gipson, and Barcavage singled with one out in the home half while trying to help her team knot the game before a pair of grounders ended the inning. Stonehill added three runs in the fourth, with Carbone's two-run single the key knock, and two more came around in the sixth. Saint Michael's got on the board in the seventh, with Falls leading off with a single before coming home on Barcavage's sacrifice fly two batters later. Junior Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) singled with two down to reignite the rally, but the final batter grounded out.
The Purple Knights continue a run of nine games in five days when they host Stonehill for the conclusion of their three-game series tomorrow with a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
