Softball celebrates Senior Day, loses NE-10 contest with Assumption

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost a Senior Day affair with Assumption College, 9-1, on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights are 1-24 overall, 1-16 in the league and 0-11 in the Northeast Division, while the Greyhounds moved to 14-17, 8-10 and 7-9.

Senior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) put together her third straight two-hit game for Saint Michael's, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double. Junior Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan), sophomore Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) and first-year Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) all picked up one hit. Senior Lea Gipson (Bridport, Vt./Middlebury Union) allowed three runs in 4.1 innings during two stints in the circle, and classmate Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) suffered the loss in relief, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings.

Sophomore Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) was 3-for-4 with a run for Assumption, and junior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) finished 2-for-4 with a run, three RBIs and a double. First-year Cassandra Schultz (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) drove in three runs and hit a home run off the bench. Senior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) allowed one run on five hits during a complete-game win.

Gipson and Lattal took dueling shutouts into the fourth inning, as each team's best threat came in the second. The Greyhounds put runners at first and second with two down, but sophomore third baseman Jenna Maksian (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) took an ensuing grounder and stepped on the bag to end the inning. Classmate Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) was hit by a pitch leading off the home half and moved up 60 feet on Falls' sac bunt, and Maksian reached on a two-out error before both were stranded.

Assumption broke through in the fourth on senior Kolby Davenport's (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) one-out RBI single but, with runners at first and second, Gipson induced consecutive fly balls to senior left fielder Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) to end the frame, including on Lemnah's sliding effort for the final out. Falls knotted the contest in the home half, doubling in first-year pinch-runner Sarah Bagley (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) before being thrown out trying to reach third base on the play.

The visitors plated a single run in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth and five in the seventh to break the tie and pull away. Junior Ashley Impagliazzo's (Glocester, R.I./La Salle Academy) RBI single with two out in the fifth accounted for the winning run, and Crowley's two-run double with two down in the final inning was followed immediately by Schultz's two-run home run to left center.

Six seniors were honored prior to the game: Falls, Gipson, Lemnah, McCormack, Grace Bonaiuto (Beverly, Mass./Austin Preparatory School) and Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt./Colchester).

Saint Michael's hosts regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Monday for an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader. The Penmen are sixth in this week's NCAA East Region rankings.
