Saint Michael's falls in all-Purple Knight match-up, 7-5, during two-loss day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team nearly came out victorious in an all-Purple Knight match-up before falling to the University of Bridgeport, 7-5, on Monday after dropping a 10-1 decision to the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in five innings at the National Training Center Spring Games. The Purple Knights are 0-6.

In the opener, junior Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was 1-for-2 with a run and a double while also taking the loss, allowing four earned runs in three innings. Senior Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) and first-year Chandler Wilder (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) were also 1-for-2, as Murray knocked in a run.

Junior Danielle Walker (Rockford, Ill./Guiliford/Rock Valley) finished 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run for the 9-2 Cougars, while senior Erin Scott (Aurora, Colo./Seward County CC) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Junior Alyson Netty (Waterloo, Iowa/Waterloo East/DMACC) earned the win by allowing one unearned run on one hit in four innings.

Sioux Falls scored all 10 of its runs in the opening four innings, scoring twice on passed balls in the first and a pair of unearned runs in the second, including once on Scott's sac fly. Junior Kaylee Buch's (Clarinda, Iowa/DMACC) RBI single keyed a two-run third, and the Cougars plated four runs within the first four batters of the fourth, capping their scoring on Walker's two-run homer. In the home half, DelGreco drilled a double off the middle of the left field fence with two down and, after an error prolonged the inning, Murray's infield single plated the run.

During the setback to Bridgeport, junior Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, Murray was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, and sophomore Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) scored twice. DelGreco tripled, and first-year Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) fanned a season-high seven while allowing six earned runs in a complete-game effort.

Junior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif./Eastern Arizona) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run for 3-4 Bridgeport, sophomore Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) finished 2-for-3 with a run and a double, and four others had two knocks. Classmate Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) earned the win in relief, allowing two unearned runs in three innings.

Bridgeport scored the game's first three runs, with Crandall picking up a two-out, two-run single in the second inning before an unearned two-out run came home in the third. Saint Michael's countered with a pair of two-out runs in the home third, as DelGreco tripled Barnett home before scoring on Barcavage's infield single. After sophomore Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) led off the fourth with a walk and moved 60 feet on a groundout and 60 more on a passed ball, classmate Sarah Bagley (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) dropped a run-scoring bunt single to knot the contest.

The visiting Purple Knights snapped the tie with four runs in the sixth, as Crandall led off with the go-ahead home run, and three RBI hits followed. The homestanding Purple Knights put together a two-out rally in the seventh inning, with Murray's double scoring first-year pinch runner Leah Hanzas (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) and Barnett, but Lajoie induced a game-ending popup with the tying run at the plate.

Saint Michael's breaks tomorrow before returning to action on Wednesday against 25th-ranked Augustana (S.D.) College at 3 p.m. and Minnesota State University Moorhead at 5 p.m.
