Softball completes suspended game with Bridgeport, falls 3-2 on walk-off hit

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team completed its Spring Break trip with a 3-2 walk-off loss to the University of Bridgeport on Friday when junior Brittney Maio (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) singled home the winning run with two down in the bottom of the seventh inning. Friday's action, which came at the National Training Center Spring Games, concluded a contest that was suspended on Thursday during the fourth inning due to inclement weather.

Junior Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) reached base all four times she came to the plate for the 0-10 Purple and Gold, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and two doubles. Sophomore Christina Brazeau (Warwick, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) finished 1-for-1 with a run, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, classmate Sarah Bagley (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) drove in a run, and first-year Chandler Wilder (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) scored once. Classmate Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) took the loss after yielding three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out six and walking four in 6.2 innings.

Maio ended the contest 3-for-3 with two runs, the winning RBI, a walk and a double for 4-10 Bridgeport, which had lost twice on Friday immediately prior to completing this contest. Senior Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) was 2-for-4, while junior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif./Eastern Arizona) went 1-for-2 with the winning run and a stolen base off the bench. Sophomore Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) yielded six hits while striking out six and walking four during a complete-game triumph.

Sophomore Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) walked with one down in the top of the first inning before DelGreco doubled her to third base to provide Saint Michael's with an early opportunity, but Lajoie struck out the next batter and was able to get the final Purple Knight to ground out to end the threat. Brown also worked around a two-on, two-out situation in the home half following a single and a walk, but the last Bridgeport batter popped up.

Brazeau's leadoff base on balls in the second was followed by sophomore Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) sacrificing her to second, but the next two hitters fanned. Bridgeport got on the board in the home half, as Maio singled leading off, moved up on a sacrifice, and took third when sophomore Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) reached on a two-base error. After a strikeout, junior Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) was plunked with two down, and senior Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) walked to force in an unearned run.

Saint Michael's again threatened in the third, as DelGreco singled with two down before being stranded. Maio's two-out double in the home half also went for naught. With senior Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) batting in the fourth and the count 2-1, lightning and rain forced the game's suspension by one day. Upon resumption, Brazeau was hit by a pitch with one out and claimed second base on a passed ball but moved no further.

The visiting Purple Knights tied the game the following frame, as Wilder walked with one down, advanced 60 feet on Barnett's sac bunt and scored on DelGreco's double. An inning later, Brazeau singled with one out before junior Jenna Maksian (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Bagley came through with consecutive one-out knocks, with Bagley's single scoring Brazeau from second base to put Saint Michael's ahead.

Sophomore Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield) got the run right back for the homestanding Purple Knights in the sixth, coming through with a pinch-hit RBI single, and Brown got out of a two-on, one-out jam with a strikeout and a popup. DelGreco walked with one out in the seventh for her team's final threat, and the Purple and Gold nearly escaped the bottom half unscathed after Wall led off with a single. Brown snagged a line drive off of a bunt attempt and converted that into a double play, but Crandall followed with a single, stole second, and scored the winning run on Maio's ensuing base hit.

With their Sunday doubleheader at Le Moyne College now canceled and their game slated for Tuesday at Franklin Pierce University postponed, the Purple Knights will plan to host Franklin Pierce next Thursday for a Northeast-10 Conference twinbill at 3 p.m.
