Softball swept by Stonehill in Sunday doubleheader

EASTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader, 8-0 in five innings and 1-0, to Stonehill College on Sunday at Gartland Field during Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play. The Purple Knights remain winless through 13 games and are 0-3 in the league, while Stonehill is 11-8 and 5-2.

Senior Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan), junior Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) and sophomores Christina Brazeau (Warwick, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) and Caroline Staples (Stoughton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) all had a hit in the opener for Saint Michael's. First-year Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) allowed six runs on four hits while striking out one batter in two innings for the loss. Classmate Leah Hanzas (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) surrendered two runs - no earned - on two hits and struck out a pair in two innings.

Junior Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base for Stonehill, while classmate Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) doubled, scored twice and had an RBI during her 2-for-2 performance. Sophomore Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) hit a grand slam and classmate Jacklyn Oleksak (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored twice. Junior Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) struck out four during a four-hit shutout.

Stonehill plated six runs on four hits in the second inning to break a scoreless tie. After Ropiak drew a one-out walk, the Skyhawks strung together three straight hits, including RBI singles by Ruonavaara and Esposito. A two-out walk to junior Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) loaded the bases for Carbone, who blasted a grand slam to left field to give the hosts a 6-0 lead. The Skyhawks then scored twice in the third when Esposito hit a two-run single up the middle. Saint Michael's led off the fifth inning with Brazeau and Staples singling, but Ropiak set down the next three batters to end the game.

In game two, Brazeau and sophomores Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) and Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) each picked up a hit, while DelGreco walked. Brown scattered nine hits and struck out four in the loss.

Stonehill received a base hit from everyone in the starting lineup, with sophomore Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) providing an RBI and Staudle scoring a run. Ruonavaara allowed three hits and fanned five batters in the complete-game shutout.

Saint Michael's stranded runners at the corners in the first inning after Brazeau led off with a single and later reached third with two outs. Stonehill pushed across the game's lone run in the home half of the first by reeling off three consecutive one-out hits, including Squeri's RBI single up the middle to score Staudle from third. Brown then escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the second after getting a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.

Following Barnett's leadoff single in the third and Brazeau's sacrifice bunt, the Purple Knights were unable to capitalize with the runner in scoring position after Ruonavaara got a strikeout and groundout. Barbato's fifth-inning single gave the visitors their only baserunner until the sixth, when junior Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) reached base and advanced to second on a two-out error before Ruonavaara induced a popup to end the inning. Ruonavaara then pitched a perfect seventh to end the game.

Saint Michael's travels to Franklin Pierce University for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday.
