Barbato and Brazeau hit first college home runs, softball falls at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team opened a three-game weekend series with Assumption College on Friday by dropping a 13-6 decision on Marois Field. The Purple Knights fell to 2-27 overall and 2-17 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds are 19-15 and 11-9.

Sophomores Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) and Christina Brazeau (Warwick, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) both drilled their first college home runs for Saint Michael's, as Brazeau scored two runs and Barbato drove home a pair. Junior Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) posted her second multi-hit game in a row, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. First-year Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) took the loss after allowing nine earned runs over six frames while striking out six. Brown worked her 14th complete game of the year.

Senior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name Central Catholic) was 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBIs, two doubles and one of Assumption's three home runs. Classmate Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./La Salle Academy) went 3-for-4 with three runs and two of her team's six doubles, while sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Classmate Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) notched the win with six innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits. She struck out four.

The Purple Knights scored four two-out runs, all unearned, during the opening frame, as Barcavage came through with a two-run single to left field before Barbato drove her home with a two-run homer to left. DiPilato countered with a two-out, two-run home run in the home half, but Brazeau swatted a solo shot with two out in the second to make it 5-2 in favor of the visitors.

Assumption scored 11 of the final 12 runs, compiling big third and sixth innings. Six runs came home on as many hits in the third, as DiPilato's RBI double was followed by Abad's tying two-run two-bagger. Junior Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) broke the knot with a two-run homer. Abad added a run-scoring single the next frame, but Saint Michael's countered in the fifth, as sophomore Jessica Barnett (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) doubled to right center before coming home on senior Sarah Murray's (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) sacrifice fly. The Purple Knights trailed 9-6 heading into the sixth.

After the visitors left a runner on in the top half of the sixth, the Greyhounds plated four unearned runs in the home portion of the inning, with DiPilato striking an RBI double and senior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) adding a two-out, two-run home run.

The teams finish their series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. doubleheader for the Purple Knights' final contests of the year.
