Softball swept by Franklin Pierce during NE-10 doubleheader

RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Franklin Pierce University, 6-3 and 6-0, on Wednesday at the Bisaccia Softball Complex. The Purple Knights are 3-22 overall and 2-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Ravens are 7-16 and 3-8.

In the opener, senior Jenna Maksian (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) walked twice and added a sacrifice bunt for the visitors, while classmate Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane), junior Caroline Staples (Stoughton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and first-year Payton Witalec (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) all drove in runs, with Witalec providing a pinch-hit sac fly. Barcavage finished 1-for-2 while also dropping a sac bunt, and sophomore Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) took the loss after allowing three earned runs during a complete-game effort. She fanned 10, coming within one of her career high.

Senior Erin Wood was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore Cassidy Sorenson was 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI, a walk, a double and two stolen bases. Senior Mandi Adee allowed one earned runs during a complete-game effort, as she gave up four hits while striking out four and walking three.

Junior Christina Brazeau (Warwick, R.I./Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) led off the game with a walk and scored on Staples' two-out single, but senior Morgan Cahill's two-out RBI double plated Sorenson in the second, and Wood's RBI single made it 2-1 in the fourth. The hosts broke out with four runs on four hits and one error in the fifth, as three of the runs were unearned. Saint Michael's countered with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, as Barcavage's RBI single was followed by Witalec's sac fly, but only one of the Purple Knights' final six batters reached base.

First-year Fallon Tierney (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) was 2-for-4 with a double in the nightcap for Saint Michael's, and Maksian doubled as one of five players with one hit. First-year Molly Feeney (Valhalla, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) allowed all six runs, four of which were earned, during four innings of work before classmate Anna Meusel (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) tossed a pair of shutout innings in relief.

Wood was 2-for-3 with a run, three RBIs and two doubles, while Sorenson hit a two-run home run. Sophomore Samantha Bonvino finished 2-for-2 with two runs and a double. Senior Tricia Hansen spun the seven-hit shutout, striking out one and walking none.

Wood's one out RBI double drove home the winning run in the first inning before third baseman Maksian snagged a line drive and touched third to complete an inning-ending double play, and the Purple Knights put runners on while threatening in each of the next two innings. Junior Danielle Barbato (Hillsdale, N.Y./Taconic Hills) singled with one down in the second but moved no further, and Tierney doubled with two down in the third but was stranded. Four Ravens scored in the home half, all with two out, as Wood hit a two-run double and Sorenson drove her home with a two-run homer.

Cook made it 6-0 with a two-out RBI single in the fourth, and the visitors put together threats in each of the final two innings, including as Tierney led off the sixth with a single before Maksian doubled her to third. However, Hansen induced a groundout and a popup before fanning the final hitter. In the seventh, sophomores Chandler Wilder (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and Kaleigh Fallon (Mashpee, Mass./Sturgis Charter Public School) both singled with two out, but the final batter bounced into a fielder's choice.

The Purple Knights host their next six contests, beginning with a twinbill against Assumption College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
