COLCHESTER, Vt. - Sophomore Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) went 6-for-7 with five RBIs, three extra-base hits and a shutout as the Saint Michael's College softball team swept Stonehill College, 6-4 and 8-0 in six innings, on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights are 8-21 overall and 5-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference after extending their series winning streak to four games, while the Skyhawks fell to 8-24 and 7-15.
Rathwell finished 3-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a double in the opener, sophomore Aleksandra Apkarian (Butler, N.J./Butler) was 1-for-1 with two runs, an RBI and two walks, while senior Danielle Brown (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Brown was also the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game while striking out nine and walking three. Her 49th career complete game tied Kara McManus '02 for third in program history, and with a career-high 131 strikeouts this spring, Brown matched Megan O'Connor '09 for fifth all-time. Sophomore Danielle Markowski (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) doubled and drove in two runs.
First-year Hannah Ricker went 2-for-4 with a run for Stonehill, classmate Gianna Azzato hit a pinch-hit home run, and sophomore Kazi Walker knocked a two-run single in her only plate appearance. Senior Jennifer Mayette took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings. She walked three and struck out none.
As the third batter of the game, junior Carly Rennie doubled to score Ricker in the top of the first inning, but Brown did not allow another run until the sixth. After she pitched around a bases-loaded, one-out threat in the third, the hosts scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth frames. Apkarian's RBI single knotted the game in the fourth before Brown came through with a two-out, two-run, opposite-field single to put her team in front for good.
With two down in the fifth, Rathwell knocked an RBI double before Markowski ripped a two-run double to make it 6-1. Walker hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth, and Azzato homered in the seventh to bring her team within two runs. Back-to-back Skyhawks reached with two down, but Brown struck out the final batter swinging.
In game two, Rathwell allowed four hits during her second career shutout while striking out one and walking none, and batted 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs, a walk-off double and a home run. Junior Fallon Tierney (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, classmate Hayley Craddock (Campbell River, British Columbia/Carihi Secondary School/Highline) added two hits and a run, and Markowski picked up a hit while scoring twice. Sophomore Katie Terban (Georgetown, Mass./Saint Mary's) went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Azzato was one of four Skyhawks with a hit and also stole a base, while first-year Genna Hartman allowed only two runs over 5.2 frames of a complete game. She struck out one and walked one.
Sophomore Julia Sevigny (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) knocked a two-out single up the middle to score Markowski with an unearned run in the second inning, and Rathwell did not allow a hit until the third inning, the only knock against her in the opening 4.1 frames. Saint Michael's scored three more unearned runs with two out in the third, with Rathwell coming home on an error before Terban knocked a two-run single to center field. Rathwell drilled a two-run homer to left center in the fifth before she hit her walk-off double with two out in the sixth to plate sophomore pinch runner Sarah Wight (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and Craddock with unearned runs.
The teams complete their three-game weekend series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. Senior Day contest.
