COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College softball rising senior Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) was among 98 student-athletes across 10 sports selected for a Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference accolade for the spring athletic season.
Rathwell earned the accolade for the second straight year, becoming the sixth member of her program to ever claim the honor multiple times. Purple Knight softball players have now been recognized with NE10 Academic All-Conference laurels 18 times in the past 15 seasons.
One of 15 softball players from across the NE10 to land Academic All-Conference this spring, Rathwell was also recognized as all-conference for the third consecutive season. She adds to a list of accomplishments that include her selection as Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-District 1 as a sophomore and to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all six of her semesters at Saint Michael's. While majoring in biochemistry and minoring in physics, Rathwell holds a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average.
Rathwell started 27 games in the circle, four at third base, three at shortstop and eight as the designated player, and made 25 of her 36 starts hitting third. She turned in a career-high 38 hits while nearly mirroring her totals from each of the last two seasons, with a .352 batting average, .519 slugging percentage, .397 on-base percentage, nine doubles, three home runs, 11 RBIs and eight walks. Rathwell fanned only nine times, cutting down after averaging 19.5 the last two years. She was 10th in the NE10 in slugging, 11th in batting, tied for 16th in doubles, and tied for 19th in homers. Heading into her senior year, Rathwell is second in program history in career doubles (28), tied for sixth in home runs (10), ninth in RBIs (49), and 11th in hits (108).
As a pitcher, Rathwell made 27 appearances, completing 21 of her 24 starts. Over 155.1 innings, she struck out 93. She was fourth in the NE10 in complete games, tied for fourth in starts, seventh in innings pitched and strikeouts, and tied for 11th in appearances. Rathwell tossed the third-most innings and complete games in program history in 2019, registering the most in both categories since 2007.
The NE10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR). To be eligible for selection to the academic all-conference teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative GPA; and 3) completed at least one academic year at their current institution.
