STOWE, Vt. - Three Saint Michael's College women's Alpine skiers posted career-best finishes on Friday during the first day of the season-opening University of Vermont Carnival at the Stowe Mountain Resort. The Alpine races conclude tomorrow with the slalom, while the Nordic portion of the event will occur on Feb. 1-2, when institutions' final scores and placements will be determined. Through day one, Saint Michael's stands 13th with 76 points.
Sophomore captain Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) paced all Purple Knights with a career-best 20th-place showing in the giant slalom, clocking in at 2:10.76 between a pair of runs. Classmate Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) was a career-best 34th in 2:16.00, trimming 0.60 seconds off of her opening run to improve 14 spots in the standings. Senior Karen Bell (Ogden, Utah/Rowmark Ski Academy/Montana State) also recorded the top showing of her young Saint Michael's career, as Bell, who transferred in prior to last season, grabbed 43rd in 2:18.04, moving up eight places thanks to her second run. Sophomore Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) was 47th at 2:19.88, while senior Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) rounded out her team's competitors.
On the men's side, five Purple Knights were within nine spots of one another. Junior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 30th at 2:06.04, while senior Tim Spangler (Summit, N.J./Summit) placed 31st at 2:06.26. Classmate Matt Beers (Wrentham, Mass./Killington Mountain School) took 33rd in 2:07.39, following closely by first-year Shane Love (North Conway, N.H./Gould Academy), who was 35th in his first college competition in a time of 2:07.50. Sophomore Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) completed the contingent of the Saint Michael's finishers, nabbing 38th in 2:08.31, while classmate Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) also competed.
