Four Alpine skiers place in top 30, Saint Michael's 10th after day 1 of UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. - Four Saint Michael's College Alpine skiers placed among the top 30 on Friday during day one of the two-day University of Vermont Carnival. Between Alpine and Nordic events, the Purple Knights stand 10th out of 16 institutions, with 116 points, to trail ninth-place Harvard University by 24. The carnival, whose Alpine races are being held at Stowe Mountain Resort and whose Nordic events are occurring at Trapp Family Lodge, concludes on Saturday. Men's slalom begins the slate at 9 a.m.

Senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed 16th in the giant slalom, the 20th top-20 performance of his Saint Michael's career, by clocking in at 2:10.98 between a pair of runs. By trimming 1.34 seconds off of his opening trek, Sandell moved up from a tie for 28th following the morning session. Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) was 27th in 2:11.86, cutting 0.92 ticks to move up five positions, while first-year Nick Cosentino (Waitsfield, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) was 39th at 2:15.42.

First-year Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) put together her best college showing by placing 22nd in the giant slalom, clocking in at 2:18.14 and moving up four spots thanks to her second run. Junior Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) was 30th in 2:21.59, an improvement of eight places over her morning effort. No other Purple Knight qualified for a second traverse of the mountain.

Sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was the top Purple and Gold racer in the men's 10K skate, nabbing 64th while crossing the finish line in 28:40.9. Senior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) tied for 76th in 29:38.6, and sophomore Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) rounded out his team's top three in 86th at 31:31.8.

Senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) claimed 66th in the women's 5K skate, clocking in at 16:38.3, while first-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) was 73rd in 17:01.1. Junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) took 81st in 17:27.9.
