Sandell's tie for fifth highlights Purple Knights' ninth-place showing at Saint Lawrence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) finished the regular season by tying for fifth in the slalom on Saturday, and the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined to place ninth for the fourth consecutive meet when the Saint Lawrence University Carnival came to an end. The Purple Knights totaled 315 points, besting Harvard University by 12 after trailing the Crimson by eight entering the day. The University of Vermont won with 1,001 points.

The Saint Lawrence Carnival was also serving as the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship. Alpine events were contested at Whiteface Mountain, while the Nordic portion of the weekend took place at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

For the second straight carnival, Sandell had his best performance since a third-place showing in the 2013 UVM Carnival slalom, bettering his tie for sixth in the giant slalom at Middlebury College two weeks ago. Sandell was tied for ninth in the slalom after his opening run on Saturday but tied for fifth at the end of the competition thanks to a combined two-run time of 1:52.93. It was his 10th career top-10 performance. Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) nabbed 10th at 1:53.45, and classmate Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) was 24th in 1:56.06. As a group, the men's Alpine contingent took third out of 13 teams on the day.

Entering the weekend, Farrell and Sandell were on the cusp of qualifying for the NCAA Championship, with Sandell having previously competed there twice and Farrell representing the College in 2014. Final qualifiers will be revealed on Sunday.

During the women's slalom, first-years Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) and Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) were 22nd and 27th, respectively, at 1:58.35 and 1:59.55. Junior Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) placed 41st in 2:04.98.

Junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) paced the Purple Knight women by taking 44th in the mass-start 15K classic race at 1:01:03.6, while senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) closed out her two-sport career by placing 45th at 1:01:17.5. First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) nabbed 49th in 1:02:55.0 to round out her squad's three scorers. Sophomores Catie Corrigan (Canajoharie, N.Y./Canajoharie Central School), Julia Snyder (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) and Hallie Bergwall (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) were 58th, 63rd and 64th, respectively.

Sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) took 55th during the mass-start men's 20K classic by crossing the finish line in 1:09:48.1. Senior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 61st in 1:14:58.8, and sophomore Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) captured 62nd in 1:18:00.8. Senior Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) was his team's fourth and final finisher, in 63rd.
