STOWE, Vt. - Four Saint Michael's College men's Alpine skiers finished in the top 20 on Saturday at the Stowe Mountain Resort, and the Purple Knights finished the Alpine portion of the University of Vermont Carnival sixth among 13 institutions heading into next week's Nordic races. Saint Michael's totaled 266 points to trail fifth-place Colby College by 20.
For the second straight day, the Purple Knight men scored third-place points (92) to finish behind only national powers UVM (141) and Dartmouth College (111). First-year Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) placed sixth in the slalom with a two-run combined time of 1:51.87, coming within 0.48 seconds of third place and his second trip to the podium this year. He has finished no worse than seventh in his six races.
Senior Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) nabbed a career-high 11th-place showing, clocking in at 1:53.20 to come within 0.68 seconds of the top 10. Classmate Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) was a season-best 17th at 1:55.74 to complete the Purple Knight scorers, and first-year Torjus Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed 20th in 1:56.88. The team's depth was on display on Saturday, as the squad managed the third-place showing despite first-year Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) standing fifth after his opening run but not completing a second trek.
Senior Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) tied her personal best by taking 32nd in 2:23.05, while sophomore Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 35th at 2:26.63. Senior Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) was the only other Purple Knight woman to complete a pair of runs, finishing 36th in 2:33.91. The Saint Michael's women finished ahead of the UVM women, who won Friday's giant slalom competition.
The Nordic portion of the meet occurs next Saturday and Sunday at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe.
