CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College skiing teams finished eighth among 16 schools when the University of Vermont Carnival concluded on Sunday, as the Purple Knights turned in their highest placement since also taking eighth at the 1999 Williams College Carnival. The event concluded with Nordic races at Craftsbury Outdoor Center after the Alpine competitions were contested last weekend in Stowe.
Saint Michael's totaled 385 points to finish 83 ahead of Saint Lawrence University and 93 short of Bates College. Dartmouth College won the carnival with 972 points.
Sophomore Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) cracked the top 35 for the fourth time in five individual races this winter, taking 32nd in the 10K classic with a time of 30:30.6. First-year Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had a career-best 49th-place showing at 32:00.2, while senior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 53rd for her best finish of the season. She clocked in at 32:54.9.
During the men's 10K classic, first-years Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) and Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) both recorded personal highs for the second straight day, with Schmelzle leading the Purple Knights in 40th place at 26:55.2 and Deeter taking 44th at 27:10.9. Junior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) nabbed 51st with a time of 27:36.7 to round out his team's scorers.
The Alpine and Nordic skiing teams are back in action at the Dartmouth College Carnival next weekend. Alpine races occur Friday and Saturday at the Dartmouth Skiway, while Nordic competes only on Saturday, back in Craftsbury.
