Three Alpine skiers finish in top 20, Saint Michael's concludes action at Dartmouth Carnival

LYME, N.H./CRAFTSBURY COMMON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College skiing teams finished ninth out of 14 schools when the Dartmouth College Carnival came to a close on Saturday. With the event consisting of two days of Alpine competition at Dartmouth Skiway and only one day of Nordic races at Craftsbury Outdoor Center, the Purple Knights scored 349 points to trail Saint Lawrence University by 32. The University of Vermont won with 888 points.

The men's Alpine team scored top-five points for the sixth time in eight dates this season, finishing fifth with 85 points, just eight short of the University of New Hampshire. First-year Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) paced the men with a sixth-place showing in the slalom, his seventh straight top-six performance, with a two-run combined time of 1:39.13. Senior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) continued his surge by claiming a season-best performance at the third consecutive carnival, taking 16th at 1:40.51. First-year Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) had his fourth top-25 placement this winter in 22nd with a time of 1:41.79.

In the women's slalom, sophomore Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) posted her fourth top-20 performance of the year, taking 20th in 1:42.41. Senior Nicole Cordingley's (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) 35th-place showing was her best slalom finish this season, as she clocked in at 1:47.24, and classmate Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) captured 40th at 1:48.98.

First-year Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) matched her best showing of the season by taking 49th during the mass-start 15K classic race in 52:28.0, and senior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) narrowly trailed in 51st at 52:55.0. Classmate Brianna McKinley (Moultonborough, N.H./Moultonborough Academy) nabbed 60th with a time of 55:37.0. Both seniors also reached season-high placements.

First-year Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) was 43rd in the men's mass-start 20K classic, crossing the finish line in 50:47.7, and junior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) took 54th at 52:56.1. First-year Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) was 56th in 53:03.7.

Next weekend's Williams College Carnival begins on Friday, with Alpine races at Jiminy Peak and Nordic being contested in Lake Placid, N.Y., near Mount Van Hoevenberg.
