Skiing bolstered by three top-20 finishes, sits seventh at Williams Carnival

HANCOCK, Mass./LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams stood seventh among 13 institutions following day one of the two-day Williams College Carnival after Friday's competition. Alpine races took place at Jiminy Peak before they move to Berkshire East tomorrow, while Nordic races are at the Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid. Saturday's events kick off at 9 a.m.

With 112 points, the Purple Knights are holding off Bates College by one while trailing Saint Lawrence University by 14. All of Friday's points were accrued by the Alpine squads, including the men totaling 69 to take fifth place. The lone points Nordic teams will accumulate come on Saturday, when points from pursuit races will count for double for each school.

First-year Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) posted his fourth top-five showing of the year, taking fifth place in the giant slalom with a combined two-run time of 1:32.06, moving up from eighth after his opening run thanks to the fastest second trek down the hill, at 45.19 seconds. He finished just 0.15 seconds outside the top three. During Saturday's slalom, Grand will wear the leader bib. Classmate Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) recorded his third top-20 performance, taking 17th in 1:34.50. During his first carnival this season, senior Shane Love (North Conway, N.H./Gould Academy) was 46th at 1:38.79 as his team's third scorer.

Sophomore Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) finished among the top 20 for the fifth time by nabbing 19th in the GS at 1:38.45. Junior Abigail Hotaling (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) was 37th in 1:43.65, and senior Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) took 42nd at 1:45.25. First-year Katie Miller (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) placed 44th to come within two spots of scoring in her college debut.

Junior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was 35th in the 10K freestyle at 26:14.8, within 9.1 seconds of the top 30. First-years Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) and Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) were 49th and 57th, respectively, in 26:50.7 and 27:25.1.

On the women's side, sophomore Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) was 53rd in the 10K freestyle in a time of 32:08.8, while first-year Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and senior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) nabbed 61st and 62nd, respectively. Duclos clocked in at 33:40.3 and Cubberley was 2.2 seconds back.
