LYME, N.H./HANOVER, N.H. - Junior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) placed fourth in the slalom on Saturday to highlight the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams' final day of competition at the Dartmouth College Carnival. The Alpine events were held at the Dartmouth Skiway, while Oak Hill Cross Country Center hosted the Nordic races.
The two squads combined to take eighth place among 17 schools behind 340 points, just 25 shy of seventh-place Bates College. The Alpine program was fifth for the weekend, coming within 25 points of the University of New Hampshire. The Alpine women were also fifth, while the men took fourth, trailing New Hampshire by just one point while edging out Middlebury College by one point. Dartmouth won its carnival with 1,019 points.
The men's Alpine squad was third in the slalom, scoring 86 points to place behind only Dartmouth and the University of Vermont. Grand was fourth with a two-run time of 1:44.17, while senior Mathias Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) took 16th in 1:46.36. Classmate Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) placed 24th at 1:47.55.
Junior Torjus Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) gave the Purple Knights four in the top 30 by nabbing 27th at 1:47.78. Sophomore Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) was 38th in 1:49.72, while junior Tristan McInnis (Holladay, Utah/Rowland Hall) placed 45th with a time of 1:51.96.
Senior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) led the women by taking 14th in the slalom at 1:51.18, and sophomore Emilia Laffin (Chamonix, France/Lycée du Mont-Blanc René Dayve) captured 27th at 1:54.66. Classmate Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS) took 32nd in 1:56.99, and sophomore Megan Ahearn (Ringwood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was one spot back in 33rd at 1:58.15. Junior Clara Lopez Costa (Barcelona, Spain/Green Mountain Valley School) narrowly trailed in 37th at 1:58.75.
First-year Ale Legate (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) posted a career-best 40th-place showing during the mass-start 10K freestyle, clocking in at 15:54.6. Senior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) was 56th in 16:23.7, and sophomore Aimee Sala (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Kents Hill School) took 68th at 17:30.7.
Sophomore Kevin Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was the men's team's top finisher for the second time this weekend, taking 67th in the mass-start 10K freestyle in 30:18.0. Classmate Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) was 69th in 30:30.3, and first-year Alex Warner (East Montpelier, Vt./U-32) captured 77th at 31:38.7.
The Purple Knight squads both head to the Williams College Carnival next Friday and Saturday.
