COLCHESTER, Vt. - On the strength of 29 event victories, the Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened their seasons by sweeping Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday in the Ross Sports Center natatorium. The women claimed their 11th straight win over the 1-1 Chargers, 177-89, while the men notched their ninth consecutive series victory, 167-74, against an 0-2 Colby-Sawyer squad.
Senior Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and junior Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) both played a hand in four victories. McNall won the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley while completing legs for the top 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay squads. She joined Fischang on both quartets, while Fischang also topped the 50 and 100 free fields. Fischang's four wins were a career high after she missed last season due to injury and totaled seven victories as a first-year.
Junior Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield), sophomore Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) and first-year Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) notched three wins each. Giampietro and Murphy were part of the top 200 medley relay squad, while Giampietro topped the 50- and 200-yard breaststroke fields and Murphy the 50- and 100-yard butterfly competitions. Kohn won the 500 and 1,000 free races while leading off for the victorious 200 free relay foursome. Junior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) won both one-meter diving events, and first-year Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) won the 50 back and swam for the top 200 free relay.
Eight different men won individual events, while sophomores Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) and first-years Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) and Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) all nabbed three wins. Butler was part of the top 200 free and 200 medley relay quartets while also claiming the 50 breast, his first career win in an individual event, while Thornton led off for the top 200 medley relay and won the 200 and 500 free races.
Hopkins anchored the winning 200 free team and was the fastest 50 and 100 free swimmer, while Mulderrig was part of the triumphant 200 medley foursome before topping the 100 fly and 200 IM races. Senior Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) swam for both relay winners, while classmate Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord) was on the 200 free team and claimed the 50 fly race for the first solo victory of his career. During his first collegiate meet, junior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) won both one-meter diving competitions, classmate Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) was the fastest 1,000 free swimmer, and first-year Brian Cavanaugh (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) won the 200 breast.
The Purple Knight women host Merrimack College next Friday at 5 p.m., while both squads are back in action next Saturday at Clarkson University at 1 p.m.
