COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team dropped a 101-74 decision to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Wednesday at Ross Sports Center. After the loss, the Purple Knights fall to 8-12 overall and 6-10 in the league, while the River Hawks, who entered the contest with wins in nine of their last 10, improve to 15-5 and 12-4.
Junior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) approached a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass for Saint Michael's, while first-year Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) added 15 points and four boards. Senior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) finished with 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and a pair of steals, and classmate Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) totaled 10 points and three assists. Senior Kayla Carnell (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) netted a career-high eight points and grabbed five boards, while junior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had three assists and two steals.
Senior Bianca Simmons (Middletown, Conn./Mercy) scored a game-high 24 points while seven assists and six rebounds for UMass Lowell, and first-year Amra Elezovic (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) contributed 16 points, six boards and a pair of steals. Senior Whitney Wilson (Lowell, Mass./Lowell/Salem State) notched 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, junior Danielle DePierro (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) netted nine points, and first-year Lindsey Doucette (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had eight points. First-year Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.J./Kennett) contributed eight points and four assists.
Five Purple Knights scored in the first half's opening 6:43, as the hosts trailed 16-14. The River Hawks used a 29-6 run during a span of 7:20 to grab a 45-20 advantage before Burud went on a personal 6-2 run, helping the hosts score 16 of the game's next 25 points to close out the frame.
After Saint Michael's trailed 90-61 with 7:24 left to play in the second half, Carnell converted a jumper to cap an 8-0 Purple Knight run with 4:26 remaining. UMass Lowell closed the game on an 11-5 run during a 2:08 stretch.
Saint Michael's is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
