MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team trimmed a double-digit deficit to single figures with 3:31 remaining on Wednesday before dropping a 79-66 Northeat-10 Conference Northeast Division clash with Saint Anselm College in Stoutenburgh Gym. The Purple Knights, who played their first contest decided by double digits, slipped to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10, while the Hawks are 6-4 and 2-3.

Senior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) turned in her fourth double-double of the season for Saint Michael's, totaling 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. She shot 6-of-12, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) posted 15 points on 6-of-9 two-point shooting along with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Senior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) posted 11 points and four steals, and first-year Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting inside the arc off the bench. Junior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) tacked on six boards, four helpers and two blocks. The Purple Knights attempted only eight free throws, making five, while the Hawks were 23-for-27.

Senior Briana Jones (White Plains, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) scored a game-high 20 points for Saint Anselm thanks to a 10-of-11 showing from the charity stripe, and classmate Tori Lehr (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) notched 17 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Meg Morrissey (South Kingstown, R.I./South Kingstown) added 13 points and six assists.

The hosts scored the first four points before Deroy twice gave her squad a one-point lead, on buckets at 15:44 and 14:22 of the opening half, but the Hawks used an 8-0 run to forge a 16-9 lead by 12:21. Long knocked down a jumper to help the visitors edge within 24-22, but Saint Anselm scored the next seven points and eventually stretched the lead to 38-27 with 3:43 remaining. However, Long canned a three-pointer to create a 40-36 margin at 1:14, and Burud's bucket with 14 seconds left kept the Purple Knights within four, at 42-38, by intermission.

Saint Anselm scored the first nine points of the second half, extending their lead to 57-42 on a pair of Jones free throws with 12:29 left in regulation. During the following 5:42, Saint Michael's yielded only one bucket while rattling off a 10-2 run, whittling its deficit to 59-52 when Long found sophomore Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) for a three-pointer at 6:58. The Hawks again gained a 12-point advantage before back-to-back Burud buckets brought the Purple Knights within 68-60 by 3:31, but the hosts tallied the next nine points to lead by 17 with 1:00 left.

The Purple Knights remain on the road to face No. 1 Bentley University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Falcons' national ranking is according to this week's USA TODAY poll.
