Saint Michael's drops 82-71 decision at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team fell by an 82-71 count on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University during Northeast-10 Conference play in Moore Field House. The Purple Knights slipped to 3-11 overall and 2-8 in the league, while the Owls are 8-8 and 4-6.

Senior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) posted her seventh double-double of the season for Saint Michael's, totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had 13 points, five assists and three steals. Junior Kelly Frappier (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) shot 5-of-7 for 10 points, first-year Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) had nine points, six boards, three helpers and three steals, and sophomore Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) canned three three-pointers for nine points. Junior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) tacked on eight points and eight rebounds.

After Saint Michael's shot 11-of-14 on free throws in the first half to the Owls' 6-of-6, the hosts took 22 freebies to the Purple Knights' eight during the second stanza. For the game, Southern Connecticut State turned a 21-5 advantage on the offensive glass into a 23-5 lead in second-chance points. Junior Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) notched 18 points, four assists and three steals for the hosts, senior Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario/Father Goetz Catholic/Coffeyville CC) had 17 points, and first-year Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) totaled 13 points, 12 boards and three steals.

Saint Michael's trailed 17-6 by the time 11:17 remained in the opening half before rattling off 28 points in the last 9:10 on an 8-for-12 shooting performance. In a 22-11 game, Frappier scored back-to-back hoops to cap a 6-0 run before the Owls extended their lead to 36-21. From there, the Purple Knights netted 13 points in the last 2:10 alone, with seven different players scoring. Long buried a three to create a single-digit margin, 38-30, and Evora's two free throws brought the visitors within six. After Primo made two freebies of her own at 10 seconds, Sabine dropped in a lay-up as time wound down, making it 40-34 by intermission.

Southern Connecticut State quickly pushed its lead back to double figures, leading 50-36 2:42 into the second half. Gaudreau buried her first three immediately before Long's lay-up made it 54-45 at 13:34, but the Owls went back up by 14 and still led by double digits with fewer than eight minutes remaining. Gaudreau buried another triple at 6:14 to make it 65-57 and, after five straight points by the hosts, Gaudreau canned a three to produce a 70-60 margin at 3:04. The Purple Knights cut their deficit to nine points on three occasions before Evora brought the Purple Knights within 77-69 with 45 seconds left, but the Owls went 3-of-4 on free throws prior to the teams trading late buckets.
