WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team lost an 80-66 decision to regionally-ranked Assumption College on Wednesday in Laska Gymnasium. The Purple Knights slipped to 3-20 overall and 2-17 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds, who are 10th in this week's NCAA East Region rankings, are 15-9 and 11-8.
Senior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) posted 24 points, shooting 3-of-4 from three-point range and 7-of-8 on free throws, to go along with nine rebounds. While pushing her career rebounding total to 589 and passing Lynne Liebhauser '94 (581) for 12th in program history, Long was one point short of her career high while falling a single board shy of her 10th double-double this season. She notched her sixth career 20-point game, including the second against Assumption. Sophomore Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) notched her fifth double-double of the year with a career-high 21 points and a career-high-tying 11 rebounds, among them a personal-best nine offensive rebounds as the lone Purple Knight to snag an offensive board. Burud was 11-of-15 on free throws, setting a high for freebies while tacking on two assists and two steals.
Senior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) added 11 points in her 99th career game, and junior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) posted seven points and two assists. The Purple Knights shot 21-of-51 (41.2%) from the field but attempted 19 fewer shots than the Greyhounds.
Senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) paced Assumption with 16 points and five assists, while classmate Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) tallied 13 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. First-year Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass./Reading) shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc en route to 12 points, and junior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) shot 5-of-6 for 10 points.
The Purple Knights eliminated an early 6-0 deficit thanks to hoops during a 69-second stretch by Burud, Deroy and Long, but Assumption used a 9-2 run to forge ahead 17-10 after back-to-back buckets by Ackerman. Long buried a three with 8:04 remaining in the opening stanza before first-year Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) knocked down a free throw at 6:52 to bring her team within 25-24, but the Greyhounds slowly pushed their advantage to 42-28 just 21 seconds into the second half after holding a 12-point halftime edge. During the second stanza, Assumption never led by more than 19 points or by fewer than 12.
The Purple Knights complete their home slate on Saturday by hosting Southern New Hampshire University for a Senior Day contest at 1:30 p.m.
