Burud's late overtime hoop pushes women's basketball past Southern New Hampshire, 64-63

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's basketball sophomore Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) hit two late free throws to force overtime before dropping in the winning bucket with 29 seconds remaining in a 64-63 victory over Southern New Hampshire University on Senior Day in the Ross Sports Center. The Purple Knights improved to 4-20 overall and 3-17 in the Northeast-10 Conference, snapping a 12-game losing streak, while the Penmen are 7-18 and 5-15 while falling for the seventh consecutive contest.

Burud scored 10 points off the bench while pulling down a career-high-tying 11 rebounds for the second straight game, recording eight on the offensive end alone. She added four assists and two steals, as 17 of the 22 boards she has snagged in the past two games were offensive. The hosts held a 46-30 advantage on the glass, including 19-4 at the offensive end, to help overcome shooting 35.3 percent to the Penmen's 44.6 percent.

Senior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) totaled 12 points and six rebounds, and junior reserve Kelly Frappier (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) matched her career high with 12 points, shooting 5-of-6. Classmate Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) added eight points and eight rebounds, while three Purple Knights scored six points, as all eight players who saw action scored. Senior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) dished out five assists in her final home game, becoming the 41st player in school history to appear in 100 games, and first-year Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) tallied four steals.

Junior Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) had 17 points and a team-high six rebounds for Southern New Hampshire, first-year Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) tacked on 12 points and three blocks, and sophomore Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) notched 12 points. As a team, the Penmen blocked nine shots.

After Ryan canned a go-ahead three-pointer 19 seconds into overtime, the teams went through five lead changes. Frappier knocked down two free throws to put Saint Michael's in front, 60-59, with 3:35 left before senior Emily O'Callaghan (Cork, Ireland/Glanmire/Dawson CC) gave the visitors their final lead, 63-62, on a jumper at 1:43. In the final minute, Burud grabbed an offensive board and dropped home a lay-up with 29 ticks left to put her team back in front. On Southern New Hampshire's final play, an off-balance jumper from near the top of the key hit the far side of the backboard just before the buzzer sounded.

In the second half, Saint Michael's extended a 34-30 edge to 46-32 by the time 11:57 remained thanks to a quick 12-2 run in a 2:31 stretch, during which sophomore Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) knocked down a pair of threes. The Penmen responded with a 16-2 run, yielding only two freebies by Deroy during that time. Doherty scored seven of her team's points, and Ryan tied the game at 48 on a three-point play with 5:33 to go, the first of four ties in the closing minutes. After another Ryan bucket made it 56-52 with 2:15 left, Frappier connected on a jumper at 1:49 before Burud hit two free throws with 46.7 seconds to go, knotting the contest at 56. Southern New Hampshire's last try from a few steps beyond midcourt at the buzzer hit the front of the rim.

Springfield knocked down a pair of threes 44 seconds apart to give her team an 8-2 edge 2:54 into the game before she snapped a tie with another triple at 14:41, producing an 11-8 margin. The Purple Knights countered with a 14-1 run, as Burud and Long both turned in four points, and the hosts still led 30-20 on an Evora lay-up with 1:28 remaining. Ryan hit a jumper in the final minute to bring her team within 30-24 at halftime.
