PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team trailed by six points with fewer than three minutes remaining before ultimately falling to Pace University, 71-58, on Saturday in the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Purple Knights slipped to 8-9 overall and 3-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Setters are 9-10 and 4-8.
Junior Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) tallied a game-high 17 points for Saint Michael's, adding seven rebounds while shooting 7-of-10 on free throws, and senior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) neared a double-double with 14 points and eight boards. Sophomore Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) had 12 points and six steals. The Purple Knights, who forced 23 turnovers while committing just 15, utilized seven players while 11 different Setters appeared.
Senior Margo Hackett (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) totaled 16 points on 7-of-8 free throw shooting for Pace, while first-year Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) shot 5-of-8 while scoring 15 of her team's 40 bench points. Senior Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) notched 15 points and seven rebounds, junior Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks, and sophomore Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) hauled in eight boards.
Saint Michael's scored the first seven points of the game by the time Burud hit a jumper 1:11 after the opening tip, but Pace responded with the next eight, as Hackett scored four and dished off for a Sher go-ahead hoop at 16:33. First-year Tomi Akinpetide (Sydney, Australia/Rice Memorial) and Sabine countered with back-to-back baskets before the Setters tallied consecutive buckets to reclaim a one-point edge, but Sabine hit a pair of free throws at 10:40 to kick off a 7-0 run in a matter of 53 seconds, and the visitors led 18-12 on Akinpetide's lay-in with 9:47 to go.
A pair of Burud free throws kept Saint Michael's ahead, 20-16, before five of the half's nine lead changes occurred in an ensuing 2:58 span. Evora hit a pair of freebies at 2:18 to give the visitors their last lead of the stanza, 25-24, but Dodge dropped in a hoop 15 seconds later for the final points for either squad.
Pace utilized a 5-of-8 three-point effort in the second stanza while holding the visitors scoreless on nine long-range tries. Burud put home a go-ahead lay-in after 28 seconds, but Hackett and Oskam knocked down consecutive threes to give Pace the lead for good. Saint Michael's edged within one point three times and still trailed only 41-38 after senior Kelly Frappier (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) made a freebie with 11:25 remaining, but Hackett netted a pair of hoops and Oskam later drained a triple to produce a 48-39 margin. The visitors twice drew within five before Burud hit a pair of free throws to make it 57-51 with 2:45 left, but Pace shot 14-of-14 at the charity stripe in the final 1:51.
