Women's basketball falls to two-time defending NCAA Tournament qualifier Assumption

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team fell to Assumption College, 75-54, on Wednesday in the Ross Sports Center during Northeast-10 Conference play. After going 3-1 in their most recent four games, the Purple Knights slipped to 11-13 overall and 6-13 in the league. The Greyhounds, who qualified for the last two NCAA Tournaments, improved to 14-10 and 9-10.

With two regular-season games remaining, the Purple and Gold finds itself in a three-way tie for fifth place in the NE-10 Northeast Division with Bentley University and Saint Anselm College. The top five in both of the NE-10's divisions qualify for the 10-team postseason tournament.

Junior Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) netted a game-high 19 points for Saint Michael's, shooting 2-of-3 on three-pointers and 4-of-4 on free throws while snagging four rebounds. She also passed the 800-point plateau (807) for her career during the game, while senior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) pushed her total to 1,202 behind 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. First-year Tomi Akinpetide (Sydney, Australia/Rice Memorial) added 12 points and five boards off the bench, coming within one point of her season high. Sophomore Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) provided seven points, four steals and three assists.

Five players scored in double figures for Assumption, led by senior Caitlin Ackerman's (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) 15 points, as she shot 7-of-9 while adding nine rebounds. Sophomore Allison Stoddard (Easy Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) notched 12 points and four assists, and classmate Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) posted 12 points and six boards off the bench. Junior Ann Marie Idusuyi (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) added 10 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Holy Trinity) had 10 points and four assists.

The teams played through four lead changes and three ties in the opening 8:19 of the game, with Sabine scoring her team's first five points before Akinpetide notched the next four in her first stint off the bench, dropping a lay-in at 13:57 of the first stanza to give her team a 9-7 edge. Storey knotted the contest 58 seconds later to kick off a 12-4 run, and Stoddard gave the Greyhounds the lead for good with a three-pointer at 11:41.

After Assumption pushed its lead to six, first-year Maddy Bennett's (Montpelier, Vt./U-32) jumper brought Saint Michael's within 19-15 at 7:48, but another Bennett bucket accounted for the lone Purple Knight points in an ensuing 11-2 run by the visitors. Akinpetide posted four of her team's points in a 7-2 counter, bringing the hosts within seven points, and Saint Michael's trailed by that margin, at 33-26, after Burud's steal and breakaway bucket in the final 10 seconds.

The Greyhounds began the second half on an 18-2 run to pull away. Stoddard netted five points, including a three-pointer that made it 51-28 with 14:34 remaining. Saint Michael's came as close as 20 points down the stretch, on Burud's triple at 12:39, and an 8-2 run brought the hosts within 21 on Sabine's lay-in with 3:03 left. Burud had four points while first-year Alaina Greaney (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) notched the other two points in the run.

Saint Michael's hits the road to take on Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The contest will be televised live on NESN National and NESNplus.
