Women's basketball holds off Post's rally in 65-60 victory

WATERBURY, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team held off Post University, 65-60, on Saturday in the Drubner Center during its final break from non-conference play. The Purple Knights are 7-8, winning for the fourth time in six games, while the Eagles fell to 0-17.

Senior Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) posted her eighth double-double of the year, matching a season high with 22 points in addition to snagging 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. She added two steals and shot 6-of-8 on free throws while passing Dani Rayner '07 (1,060) and Sarah Turkington '92 (1,063) to take over 13th in school history with 1,078 points. Burud also tied Kim Corbeil '85 for 11th in rebounds (653). Sophomore Leah Spencer (Brockton, Mass./Archbishop Williams) scored all 16 of her points in the second half, when she and Burud combined for 26 of the Purple Knights' 32. She added six boards.

Junior Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) passed the 700-point plateau en route to totaling 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting with two steals, and sophomore Maddy Bennett (Montpelier, Vt./U-32) hit five free throws off the bench as one of three five-point scorers. First-year Samantha Delaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) pulled six rebounds. Saint Michael's forced 22 turnovers while yielding a 2-of-9 three-point effort to Post.

Junior Jovan Kingwood led the hosts with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Lexus Childs-Harris had 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Nicole Sheloski snagged 12 caroms.

After Burud and Childs-Harris swapped opening buckets a little less than three minutes into the game, the Purple Knights took the lead for good with a 14-0 run that took 5:17 to elapse. Bennett hit three free throws in that stretch, while Evora scored five points. The Eagles responded with a 12-3 run, edging within 19-14 at 7:58 of the second period following four straight Sheloski points, but first-year Emily Ferreri (Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) jump-started an 8-0 run with a three-point play 16 seconds later, and Burud hit a jumper before senior Megan Gaudreau's (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) triple pushed the lead to 13 at 6:23.

The next nine points came from Post, which cut the deficit to four with 2:32 remaining, but the final six points of the half came from Burud, who keyed a 17-6 run that bridged halftime. Spencer also had six points in the run, which was capped by Ferreri's lay-in at 5:38 of the third. Kingwood, who scored 22 points in the second half, netted 14 points in an ensuing 19-8 run, including her team's first nine in that time, and Post trailed 52-48 on her trey with 8:06 left in the fourth. Spencer's jumper at 4:12 still had Saint Michael's up seven, but sophomore Emily McCann's lay-up with 2:49 to go concluded a quick 5-0 run, and the Eagles were down just 61-59.

Burud and junior Dericka Sims traded one freebie apiece, and Post gained possession down two with 37 seconds left, but a tying lay-up attempt was rebounded by Delaney, and Burud hit a pair of free throws at 22 ticks. With the Purple Knights now up four, the teams combined for three turnovers in a 10-second span, with Burud tacking on one more free throw at seven seconds and the Eagles missing their final shot.

The Purple Knights play three of their next four at home, beginning against Le Moyne College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
