Women's Ice Hockey Drops 3-0 Contest to SUNY Potsdam

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to the State University of New York at Potsdam, 3-0, on Friday at Cairns Arena. The Purple Knights are 2-1 while the Bears are 1-0.

Junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) had 27 stops for the Purple Knights while first-year Maddie Gervais (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) went 6-for-9 in faceoffs. Senior Brenna Wilson and junior Jenna Patterson led the Bears with a goal and an assist each while first-year Natalie Wasielewski added a goal while winning 7-of-10 faceoffs. Senior Anna-Rose Bertin contributed two assists as first-year Samantha White denied 16 shots.

At the 13:30 mark, junior Brenna Galvin (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin School) sailed a shot from the half boards through a defender's skates and toward net, causing White to make a sliding save. Junior Tatum Walber sent a pass out front at 16:24 to Bertin, who took a snapshot on net that Talcott deflected into the half boards. Just before the buzzer, first-year Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) sent a pass from behind the net to senior Jillian Witwicki (Danvers, Mass./Pingree School), who was able to get a shot off that was blocked.

The Bears scored twice within the first two minutes of play in the second stanza. At 1:15, Patterson hit a snapshot from the top of the right circle, beating Talcott glove side. Exactly 10 seconds later, after receiving a pass in the zone, Wilson sniped a shot to the top left corner from the left circle to put the Bears ahead 2-0.

During a power play at 6:30, junior Christiana Akiki's (Allendale, N.H./New Jersey Rockets) blocked shot was picked up by first-year Courtney Kelly (Arlington, Mass./Boston Jr. Shamrocks), who hit a right-circle shot that was denied by White's blocker. At the 15-minute mark, Witwicki sent a hard shot toward net that White was unable to control, as the puck spit out to the slot where Kelly was able to get another shot off that was blocked by a Bear defender.

SUNY Potsdam's final goal came at 8:55 in the third period following a breakout pass from Bertin, who sent it to senior Taylor Marcellus for a shot that Talcott denied. Wasielewski then picked up the rebound and wristed it into the right side to finish the scoring sequence for the Bears.

The Purple Knights finish their home-and-home series tomorrow at SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m.
