COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey junior Arianna Boscia (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) was named the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, Feb. 3. This is the second time Boscia has been recognized by the NEWHA this season, with the first time being as a Weekly Honor Roll selection. She is the fourth different Purple Knight this season to garner a Defensive Player of the Week selection.
Boscia turned in a goal, an assist and two blocked shots at first-place Saint Anselm College over the weekend. In a 4-1 loss on Friday, she netted a goal at 7:18 of the first period to trim the deficit to one while adding two blocks. In a 5-1 setback on Saturday, she assisted the tying power-play goal at 7:59 of the opening frame. Boscia anchored a defensive unit that held the Hawks below their national-leading scoring average between the two games and kept the fifth-best power-play unit in Division I/II scoreless (0-for-8) on the extra-woman advantage.
For the season, Boscia sits in fifth in the NEWHA in goals by a defenseman (5) and 12th in defensemen scoring (9), while being tied for 11th in power-play goals with two. Boscia has tallied career highs in points and goals, while adding four assists.
The Purple Knights are now 4-14-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the NEWHA and go on the road for a two-game weekend series against Post University, with Friday's game beginning at 3 p.m. and Saturday's at 4 p.m. The Purple Knights are three points up on the Eagles in the conference for fourth place with four conference games remaining for both teams.
